More updates regarding this week’s bridge closure. Please not me the two-way closure starts tomorrow but the bridge will close at 6 AM and reopen westbound for the evenings starting at 5:00 PM. This daily closure will run through Friday.

Please follow appropriate detour or alternate routes into town and remember to visit local shops and services. Waterdown Village remains Open for Business!

The City of Hamilton’s Engineering Services and CP Rail have refined the crane operating window for the Grindstone Creek Bridge project. As a result, the bridge will remain open on June 1. Further, between June 2 and June 5, the bridge will only be closed between 6am and 5pm daily, reopening to regular traffic and pedestrians at the end of each workday.

In addition, the pylons – and corresponding lane closure - have been removed on Dundas St between Avonsyde Blvd and Evans Rd. The pylons were in place as a traffic control element of the Grindstone Creek Bridge project, used to route the bulk of traffic onto Avonsyde and away from the construction area. The pylons and their deployment were in the control of bridge project managers, and not the City’s Transportation department.

With the temporary closure of Skinner Rd, rush hour traffic was heavily impacted, and traffic flow was overly burdened in this specific area. The Ward 15 Office registered the increasingly untenable traffic situation with the bridge project managers, and alongside the collective advocacy of concerned community members, the project mangers have agreed to change their protocol. This is a helpful and welcome modification. I want to thank our engaged and active community for helping create positive impact, particularly during the volume of infrastructure projects currently impacting Waterdown.

Please read the post and contact City of Hamilton for more information.

The City of Hamilton’s contractor, KAPP Infrastructure will fully close Grindstone Creek bridge June 1 at 7am through June 5 at 5pm. KAPP will be installing two large cranes needed to lift steel girders into place.

During the full closure, Dundas Street East will be closed to all pedestrians and vehicles between Mill St. and First St. During that time:

- There will be no vehicle or pedestrian access between Reynold Street and Mill Street
- Local access will be maintained to homes on Reynold Street as well as Waterdown Manor, and to the businesses located at 327 and 331 Dundas St E.
- EMS / Police / Fire services have been made aware and have made arrangements to ensure coverage.

Further to the last point, I have specifically asked Fire Chief Cunliffe and Police Chief Bergen for public statements confirming that Emergency Services are truly aware of the situation. I have asked for their assurances to the community that provisions have been made to ensure an emergent issue can be met with a quick and effective response, despite the temporary bridge closure.

Once the crane work is complete on June 5, pedestrian access will return to the north sidewalk, and the bridge will revert to current traffic control conditions of eastbound between 2am-2pm and westbound from 2pm-2am.

Questions regarding the work can be directed to the City’s on-site inspector, Paul Schollenberg via [email protected] or the Project Manager, Cory Peters via [email protected].
