Forests in the former Transkei still support a relatively large Cape Parrot population—but pressures are mounting. Our recent surveys confirm that both coastal and inland forests provide important habitat, but degradation is widespread. While forest extent hasn’t declined significantly, habitat quality has.
The main pressures recorded include unsustainable harvesting of forest products, over-hunting of wildlife, browsing by free-roaming livestock, and the spread of invasive plant species.
These drivers reflect a long-standing national forest conservation crisis. If unaddressed, the loss of biodiversity, forest resources, and ecological function will continue, with implications for species like the Cape Parrot and surrounding communities.

At the 4 Nests site this month, a single Cape Parrot was perched in the Lekone Gums when a group known as the Beesnest crew arrived from the northwest. As their vocalisations were heard, the lone individual immediately flew off to the southeast. The group remained for around 20 minutes before leaving the area. Shortly after, the same individual returned to its original perch and resumed calling.
This incident might explain the drop in parrot numbers recorded at the 4 Nests site, and suggests that territorial behaviour between parrot groups could be influencing site activity.

In the past few decades, the population of the critically endangered kākāpō has steadily risen from the brink of extinction. However, a new study reveals that its parasites have not experienced a similar recovery. What could this mean for the kākāpō’s future? https://bit.ly/3VoYNEF
