STO Union’s “NEW LIGHT/NOUVELLE LUMIÈRE” festivities continue with “𝑺𝑯𝑶𝑪𝑲𝑨𝑫𝑬𝑳𝑰𝑪𝑰𝑨” featuring Claire Bestland and Sheena Turcotte! 8pm/20h at Kaffé 1870!

A shocking and delicate anthology of female songwriters who embodied discontent, subversive feminine agency and a creative sexual morality, seeking to restore them to their rightful position as models to all women.

Created by Claire Bestland in collaboration with theatre artist Sheena Turcotte, 𝑺𝑯𝑶𝑪𝑲𝑨𝑫𝑬𝑳𝑰𝑪𝑰𝑨 is a new work tracing the lineage of women songwriters who defied genre, expectation, and convention. Blending original songs, reinterpretations, and storytelling, the project moves fluidly between past and present—honouring artists who baffled, inspired, and sometimes frightened audiences by refusing to stay in their lane.

Following a sold-out Phase 1 presentation in 2025, this new iteration expands again with new material, deeper collaboration, and an increased level of production.

𝐂𝐋𝐀𝐈𝐑𝐄 𝐁𝐄𝐒𝐓𝐋𝐀𝐍𝐃: Claire has performed at venues including The Ogden Museum of Southern Art and The Civic Theatre in New Orleans, The Black Sheep Inn, and the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. She has studied with musicians such as Roy Future Man Wooten and most recently undertook a period of study with Rory Block in the United States.

A highly diverse musician, Bestland’s roots and passion lie with the guitar, which she approaches as both a melodic and percussive instrument. Her studies and professional practice contribute to the development and growth of the music and forms she has inherited. Influenced by artists such as Rory Block, she is committed to reviving and reinterpreting disappearing historical guitar traditions through her work as a composer for video and theatre and as a contemporary musician performing solo and in groups.

𝐒𝐇𝐄𝐄𝐍𝐀 𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐂𝐎𝐓𝐓𝐄: Sheena has been performing for close to 30 years, starting on local event stages, then training in theatre in Montreal and Toronto, followed by years of working in theatres, for production companies and with musical artists nationally and internationally. Her creative passion is for building community through the arts and reviving timeless repertoire for modern audiences.

David Perrett is a Luskville-based sculptor whose work masterfully bridges classical and contemporary processes. With a deep passion for tactile material exploration, he integrates stone, metal, wood, and electronics into elegant, polished objects that probe themes of materiality, perception, and wonder.

Raised in Winnipeg, David experienced the sharp contrast of harsh urban winters and immersive summers canoeing the Canadian Shield. This duality continues to shape his practice—bringing disparate material worlds together through sculpture and seeking out the “arresting moments” hidden in everyday objects and raw matter.

He holds a BFA from the University of Manitoba and an MFA from York University, and his work has been featured in regional exhibitions and documentaries.

Sculpteur basé à Luskville, David Perrett concilie avec brio, dans son œuvre, les techniques classiques et contemporaines. Animé par une profonde passion pour l’exploration tactile des matériaux, il intègre la pierre, le métal, le bois et l’électronique dans des objets élégants et raffinés qui explorent les thèmes de la matérialité, de la perception et de l’émerveillement.

Ayant grandi à Winnipeg, David a connu le contraste saisissant entre les hivers urbains rigoureux et les étés immersifs passés à faire du canoë sur le Bouclier canadien. Cette dualité continue de façonner sa pratique : il réunit des univers matériels disparates à travers la sculpture et part à la recherche des « moments saisissants » cachés dans les objets du quotidien et la matière brute.

Titulaire d’une licence en beaux-arts de l’Université du Manitoba et d’un master en beaux-arts de l’Université York, son travail a été présenté dans des expositions régionales et des documentaires.

Chris MacLean is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and beloved community choir leader who has been performing contemporary folk, world, and roots music for over 30 years. She has toured internationally and built a vibrant career rooted in both artistry and connection.

A passionate facilitator, Chris founded and leads the non-auditioned Song Kitchen Community Choir in Wakefield and Ottawa. She also creates welcoming spaces through her annual VoiceDance retreats and circle singing workshops, where singers and non-singers alike come together to improvise, harmonize, move, and build community. Her work is deeply influenced by mentors like Rhiannon and Bobby McFerrin. In 2015 she graduated from the Community Choir Leadership Training in Victoria, BC, and in 2018 completed Rhiannon’s master-class “All the Way In.” She facilitates at prestigious venues including the Omega Institute in New York and is part of the Ubuntu Choirs Network.

Chris brings warmth, wisdom, and real-world experience to the conversation about what it truly takes to sustain a creative life in the Outaouais — from professional pathways and visibility to the cultural and linguistic realities we navigate as artists here.

Chris MacLean est une auteure-compositrice-interprète, multi-instrumentiste et cheffe de chœur communautaire très appréciée, qui se produit depuis plus de 30 ans dans les registres de la musique folk contemporaine, de la musique du monde et de la musique roots. Elle a effectué des tournées internationales et s’est forgé une carrière dynamique, ancrée à la fois dans l’art et dans le lien social.

Animatrice passionnée, Chris a fondé et dirige la chorale communautaire Song Kitchen, ouverte à tous sans audition, à Wakefield et à Ottawa. Elle crée également des espaces accueillants à travers ses retraites annuelles VoiceDance et ses ateliers de chant en cercle, où chanteurs et non-chanteurs se réunissent pour improviser, harmoniser, bouger et tisser des liens communautaires. Son travail est profondément influencé par des mentors tels que Rhiannon et Bobby McFerrin. Randy Kelly is an award-winning director, editor, and cinematographer based in the Ottawa/Gatineau region. With over 30 years of experience, he has crafted a rich body of work spanning dramatic and lifestyle television series, documentaries, short and feature-length films, cinepoems, and music videos (in both English and French). His projects have aired on more than 15 television networks across Canada and internationally!

Known for his sensitivity, humanity, and immersive documentary style, Randy creates space for authentic emotions to emerge. His film “Le temps qu’il me reste” is a powerful example of a piece of work filled with respect and kindness where the camera steps back to let truth and feeling take center stage.
Since 2014, he has also shared his passion through cinepoetry and spoken-word workshops at international schools around the world. Randy is drawn to diverse subjects, - anything from history and politics to arts and science - and thrives on travel and artistic collaboration.

Randy Kelly est un réalisateur, monteur et directeur de la photographie primé, basé dans la région d’Ottawa/Gatineau. Fort de plus de 30 ans d’expérience, il a bâti une œuvre riche et variée, allant des séries télévisées dramatiques et lifestyle aux documentaires, en passant par les courts et longs métrages, les cinépoèmes et les clips musicaux (en anglais et en français). Ses projets ont été diffusés sur plus de 15 chaînes de télévision à travers le Canada et à l’international !

Réputé pour sa sensibilité, son humanité et son style documentaire immersif, Randy crée un espace propice à l’expression d’émotions authentiques. Canadian pianist and musicologist Carson Becke holds a doctorate from the University of Oxford. He has performed widely across Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the Caribbean as a soloist, chamber musician, and vocal collaborator.

Carson is co-director of Pontiac Enchanté, a concert series in Luskville, Quebec, known for innovative programming and strong environmental sustainability. He is also an active composer, arranger, and champion of lesser-known late-Romantic and early 20th-century repertoire. His two albums of Richard Strauss’s piano music and lieder (with Wallis Giunta) are available on streaming platforms. A true musical chameleon and one of the most versatile performers in the region, Mathew Falvai is a genre-spanning vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and loop artist who can do everything from elegant jazz crooning to high-energy rock and everything in between.
