April 28 is the Day of Mourning.
We remember the workers who never made it home and honour those injured or made ill on the job.
In 2023, over 1,000 workers in Canada lost their lives. Thousands more were hurt. These are not just numbers, they are our coworkers, friends, and family.
April is the month to recommit to speaking up, standing together, and fighting for safer workplaces for all workers everywhere.
Mourn the dead, fight for the living.
Day of Mourning Pause. Reflect. Remember.

Canada’s Day of Mourning was officially recognized in 1991, after being led by the labour movement and the Canadian Labour Congress.
Today, April 28 is observed in over 100 countries worldwide as Workers’ Memorial Day.
It’s not only a day to remember those we’ve lost, but a reminder to keep fighting for the living. At Cupe 1978 we believe all workers, everywhere deserve safe, healthy working conditions.

Did you know?
In 2023, 1,057 workers in Canada lost their lives on the job. 29 were young workers aged 15–24.
That same year, over 274,000 workers experienced injuries or illnesses serious enough to require time off work.
These are only the reported cases.
Behind every number is a person. A network of family, friends, and coworkers whose lives are forever changed.
April 28th marks the official day of mourning in Canada. On this day, we pause to remember those who went to work one day and never came home.
