Side Street Studio

We are very pleased to currently represent quite a special artist to Side Street Studio. Francisca Hayman and her miniature pots and bowls. Francisca was one of the original 7 women artists that created Side Street Studio 42 years and almost 700 local artists ago. She shared this article that was written about the store in 1986. I have used one of my photo apps to colourize the old photos.

Seven women create a “Side Street Studio” success...
Combine seven artists, an empty store on Fell Street and what do you get? If you’re one of the lucky ones who has visited Side Street Studio in Oak Bay, then you’ll know the answer. Side Street is a high calibre craft store owned and operated by seven (yes, seven!) women. The fruits of their labours are tastefully dis- played throughout the handcrafted items store of pottery, weaving, batik, ceramic sculpture and stained glass. Each woman has her unique responsibilities for making the business run, so too does each have a unique artistic product to contribute. Besides Nancy Secter, whose specialty is batik, the artists include potters Shirley-Ann Bertz and Francisca Hayman, weaver Lily Bohlin, stained glass artist Naomi Smith, painter Marjolyn Winkel, and ceramic sculpturist Rita Darling. I am absolutely thrilled to be accepted into the 40th Anniversary Sooke Fine Arts Show. This marks my fourth time showcasing work at this wonderful event, but it is a departure from my past entries, which featured abstract photography.
These new pieces capture Ravens observed during a deeply memorable visit with a Heiltsuk (Haíɫzaqv) elder in the community of Bella Bella (Wágḷísḷa). I have named these Ravens ‘Thought’ and ‘Memory’—translated from Norse mythology as Huginn and Muninn, the pair of magical birds who serve as Odin’s scouts and messengers. [1]
The exhibition’s 40th anniversary holds immense personal significance for me. This September marks exactly 40 years (which is so hard to believe) since I moved from Calgary to Vancouver Island to attend UVic. After earning a Diploma in Environmental Quality Control from Mount Royal College (now University), I transferred those credits toward a double major in Biology and Geography.
Following graduation, I spent twelve rewarding years working in environmental science and as a Divemaster. A major life shift occurred when I welcomed my daughters at ages 40 and 42. Choosing to stay home with them opened an entirely new path.
