If you’ve been on a microplastics rabbit hole, you know the feeling… like you need to replace your whole life overnight. But it shouldn’t be like that.
At , we’re big on starting with small swaps that make a real difference. Rachel and Jesse (our co-founders) began by simply noticing what actually touches the skin all day, and choosing (or creating) a better option.
A few easy ones:
🍽️ Cutting boards: plastic sheds into food. Wood or bamboo.
🫖 Tea bags: many “silky” ones are plastic mesh. Loose leaf or paper.
🚰 Water bottle: glass or stainless steel.
🧽 Sponges: synthetic breaks down fast. Natural fiber brush.
👱🏾♀️ Hair ties: often synthetic rubber/plastic, sitting on your scalp for hours. Organic cotton + natural rubber is an easy upgrade.
Not trying to be perfect, but just a little more intentional with what’s closest to the body and food.

Rachel and Jesse didn’t set out to “make hair accessories” but instead to make things differently. With more care for the people behind every product, the planet, and the end-consumer.
From an early idea for plastic-free shoes to the financial reality check of what it takes to produce responsibly, for many different shoe sizes, this is where the KOOSHOO story begins.

We were in Japan a few years ago, sitting with our supplier (a family business making hair accessories since the 1920s), going through some numbers on the US market.
One slide stopped the room.
→ Average pack size for the top-selling hair ties in the US: 55.
→ In Japan, it's 2.
Their operations team asked the obvious question: why would anyone need 55 at once? Fair question.
So we ran a test. Sent our hair ties alongside a few major US brands to a third-party lab. Our Round ties came back 2.5-3x stronger. Our Flat ties, hand-sewn in India, came back 6x stronger.
Fewer ties, each one built to last and to feel (AND LOOK) amazing in your hair.
Every time you buy a plastic hair tie, you're voting for oil.
Crude oil, extracted, refined, and spun into something you'll lose in a week.
It doesn’t have to be that way, though. There's always been another option.
One that feeds soil instead of depleting it. One that supports bees instead of displacing them.
You probably already know this. But it's worth sitting with.

Running KOOSHOO for 15+ years has truly been an honour. And if we’re being honest, the past few years have been tough, especially in the sustainable and ethical space, where we’ve seen so many good businesses forced to close for reasons outside their control.
