Climate Solutions Youth Fair

Calling all future climate scientists! Are you interested in renewable energy? adapting to climate change? building communities to minimize pollution? We want to hear from you!
If you're in grades 3 - 6 then join us on Wednesday, May 27th, 3:30-5:00pm at the University of Victoria for a special poster fair. You'll meet scientists working on these topics! Afterwards, families are invited to return for a public talk by Judith Sayers, indigenous leader, Chancellor of Vancouver Island University, President of Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council.
The Climate Solutions Youth Fair is part of the Capstone Conference: Mathematical Modeling for Renewable Energy and Environment.

To submit your child’s poster to the Climate Solutions Youth Fair, email Dr. Butterfield at [email protected] and tell her the poster title, your child’s grade, and their name.

Example project questions:
• What does it mean to be net-zero? Why is it important?
• What are fossil fuels and their role in becoming net zero?
• How to make our homes and schools more energy efficient?
• What is renewable energy? What is its role in becoming net zero?
• What is the most suitable type of renewable energy to power your home/school/community?
• What is wildfire risk, and how does it relate to weather? What can we do to protect our homes/ schools from fire?
• What is air pollution and what causes it? Can we build our communities in a way to minimize air pollution?
• What are the role of trees in becoming net zero?
• What are extreme events? Why is it important to be prepared for extreme events? How do we prepare for extreme events?

The UVic Math & Stats Department is launching the new Math Undergraduate Seminar (MUGS). This seminar series is open to everyone, and intended to be accessible for students who have taken 2nd year math courses.

The seminar will be Mondays starting Oct 20th from 3:30-4:30 in DSB C130. We'll have hot drinks (bring a mug if you have one!) and treats, and mostly a chance to see cool math!

We're kicking things off this Monday with a talk by Dr. Trefor Bazett on Bubbles and the Calculus of Variations. Add yourself to the email list to get updates on future talks, and we'll see you there!
