Honoured to be a guest on Carolyn Roberts’ podcast today to chat about her beautiful book Tess’s Red Dress: Honouring Love and Family, illustrated by Kelsey Mata Foote, releasing April 7, 2026! ❤️
We talked about using this book to open conversations with young students about MMIWG.
When I started my PhD I was curious whether Indigenous picture books leaned more toward hard topics than joyful ones, however my research has now shifted toward something my community is actually asking for, which is learning more about how we engage, create and teach Indigenous children’s literature.
I also shared 10 tips for educators and anyone wanting to bring these teachings forward. Full video is on Carolyn’s website and I’ll post it to mine shortly!

Hamburger Soup made it into the BC BookWorld this spring! Grateful for every bit of love this little book gets. Also… David Suzuki and I share the same birthday, March 24th 🥳

My daughter’s first science lesson is tomorrow! How hilarious are these baby fake Oolichans 😂 you can get them in the fish section at Canadian Tire, just wash them off! She’s teaching Indigenous science and mimicking how T’ilx (Oolichan grease) is made. Western science would call this “density.” Oil is less dense than water so it rises to the top, that’s how our people have always skimmed the grease. But we always knew that, we just didn’t call it density! Happy Hobiyee everyone! 🌙🐟 For educators, free lesson plans on my website, link in bio! Get creative

Thank you to Katarina and the team at HB Williams Memorial Library for having me. I came to read, but learned so much from the care and welcome in this space. The community is lucky to have all of you. Also the holiday setup was amazing!!! ❤️❤️
Hamburger Soup has come to life!! This story is set in the Nisg̱a’a Nation and follows Simg̱an, based on my nephew, learning with his Jijii. You’ll see my paternal Jijii Dora in the illustrations wearing the iconic Nisg̱a’a Nation sweater 🤍 A big t’ooyaksiy̓ n̓iin to our relative G̱alksi De’entkw (Peter McKay) for helping with the language, and you might even spot my Black German Shepherd looking like a G̲ibuu 🍂
