In a dramatic move not witnessed since the pandemic's onset, the Bank of Canada has wielded its authority by cutting the overnight rate by 25 basis points. This seismic decision brings the policy rate down to 4.75% from its stagnant 5% status since July of the previous year.
Under the astute leadership of Governor Tiff Macklem, the central bank had embarked on a trajectory of interest rate hikes in March 2022 in response to surging inflation, a consequence of pandemic stimulus and global supply chain disruptions. Now, however, the Bank of Canada is witnessing tangible evidence of a sustainable alleviation in underlying inflationary pressures.
This bold maneuver positions the Bank of Canada as the trailblazer among its peers, including the Bank of England, the European Central Bank, and the U.S. Federal Reserve, as it charts a course of rate reduction.

The Bank of Canada has reduced its overnight rate by 25 basis points to 4.75%, marking the first rate cut since the pandemic began. This decision contrasts with previous rate hikes initiated in March 2022 to combat high inflation caused by pandemic stimulus and disrupted supply chains. Governor Tiff Macklem expressed confidence in easing inflation trends, diverging from other major central banks. April's inflation rate stood at 2.7%, with a 1.7% GDP growth in Q1 2024, below forecasts. Although employment increased by 90,000 jobs in April, Macklem warned of persistent inflation risks, considering further rate cuts on a meeting-by-meeting basis. The next rate announcement is slated for July 24.
