$1.5 billion in federal funding is now available for Canadian businesses facing U.S. tariff pressure β€” and southern Ontario businesses can apply right now.

The Regional Tariff Response Initiative offers both repayable and non-repayable funding to help businesses boost productivity, lower costs, strengthen supply chains, and access new markets. Eligible sectors include steel, automotive, food security, and businesses across all industries facing trade disruption.

To qualify your business must be incorporated, located and operating in southern Ontario, and employ between 5 and 499 full-time equivalent employees. Non-profit organizations whose primary focus is supporting SMEs are also eligible for up to $10 million in non-repayable funding.

Funding ranges from $125,000 to $10 million depending on your organization type and project. The intake is open now β€” but this is a time-sensitive program and funding will not last indefinitely.

If U.S. tariffs have disrupted your operations, supply chain, or export markets, this program was built for exactly that situation.

πŸ’‘ Up to $10M available. Repayable and non-repayable options. Intake open now.

Natural Resources Canada just opened a new call for proposals under the Energy Innovation Program β€” and the window closes July 3, 2026.

The program is looking for Canadian businesses advancing applied R&D in advanced materials and components for clean energy and defence-relevant applications. Two objectives must be met to qualify: the project must integrate with domestic or allied critical mineral supply chains, and it must advance technology readiness through materials and process innovation.

The application process runs in two phases. First, an Expression of Interest (EOI) open to all eligible applicants β€” deadline July 3 at 1:00 p.m. ET. If selected, applicants are then invited to submit a Full Project Proposal. Missing the EOI deadline means waiting for the next intake entirely.

One thing worth noting for Ontario businesses already doing this kind of work: active R&D projects in advanced materials, clean energy components, or defence-relevant applications may also qualify for SR&ED tax credits β€” returning 15–35% of eligible R&D expenses as a refundable credit. Grant funding and SR&ED can often be stacked on the same project.

If you're unsure whether your work qualifies for either stream, that's exactly the conversation we have with Ontario SMEs every day.

πŸ’‘ EOI deadline: July 3, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. ET. Don't miss the window.

It's administered locally by the York Small Business Enterprise Centre (YSBEC).

Note: if you're based in Vaughan, Markham, or Richmond Hill, contact your local Small Business Enterprise Centre directly β€” the YSBEC serves the municipalities listed above.

The first step is a short eligibility form online. If you qualify, you'll be contacted to book a mandatory one-on-one consultation. Applications close June 26 at 4:30 p.m. β€” don't leave it to the last minute.

If your Canadian company is developing advanced technology in defence, cybersecurity, or clean energy for Arctic applications β€” three federal R&D funding opportunities are open right now, all closing July 2, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. ET.

All three are delivered through Innovative Solutions Canada:
πŸ›°οΈ Transportable Optical Ground Station β€” DND and CAF are seeking R&D solutions for a portable optical communications system capable of linking with LEO satellites in Arctic conditions. Phase 1 (Proof of Feasibility), TRL 1–4.
πŸ” Cybersecurity in Satellite Systems β€” DND and CAF are seeking a laboratory-based flatsat platform for cybersecurity experimentation on satellite hardware and software architectures. Phase 2 (Prototype Development), TRL 5–9.
πŸ”‹ High-Performance Battery Cells for Arctic Aviation β€” The National Research Council is seeking innovative battery cell solutions for electric aviation propulsion in extreme Arctic conditions, targeting heavy-cargo aircraft operating at βˆ’40Β°C. Phase 2 (Prototype Development), TRL 5–9. Delivered as a grant, not a contract.

All three require Canadian companies with existing prototypes or feasibility-stage innovations. Priority will be given to organizations with demonstrated track records in their respective fields.

One more thing worth noting: companies doing R&D work at this level almost certainly qualify for SR&ED tax credits β€” returning 15–35% of eligible R&D expenses as a refundable credit. Federal contracts and SR&ED can be stacked on the same project.

⏰ All three deadlines: July 2, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. ET

FedDev Ontario just announced that applications are now open for the Build Communities Strong Fund Local Impact Stream β€” and southern Ontario organizations have two deadlines to hit.

This is part of a $51 billion national infrastructure program launched in April 2026. FedDev Ontario's share for southern Ontario is $330 million over four years, directed at community buildings, recreation facilities, parks, trails, cultural spaces, and other publicly accessible infrastructure that residents use every day.

Eligible applicants include non-profit organizations, municipalities, Indigenous organizations, and public-sector bodies across southern Ontario. Projects must be shovel-ready and deliver economic, social, or environmental benefits to the community or region.

Two deadlines to know right now:
πŸ“… July 9, 2026 β€” for projects starting between April 30, 2026 and March 31, 2027
πŸ“… August 6, 2026 β€” for projects starting April 1, 2027 or later

If your organization has an infrastructure project ready to move forward, this is one of the most significant funding opportunities to come through FedDev Ontario in years. The window is short and the intake is competitive.

We help Ontario organizations build strong applications β€” from eligibility assessment to submission. If you're not sure where to start, that's exactly what a free consultation is for.

U.S. tariffs on steel, aluminum, copper, and autos are squeezing Ontario businesses right now β€” and the province has responded with direct financing support.

The Protect Ontario Financing Program offers term loans starting at $250,000 to cover working capital costs like payroll, lease payments, and utilities. Repayment terms stretch up to 6 years, with a potential 12-month principal-free period at the province's discretion.

To qualify your business must operate in Ontario in one of the affected sectors, have at least $2 million in annual revenue, employ 10 or more full-time staff, and have at least 3 years of operations and financial statements. You must also demonstrate that you've already explored federal support options.

The application starts with a short eligibility questionnaire. If you screen through, the province contacts you directly to walk through next steps.

If your business is feeling tariff pressure and you haven't looked into this yet β€” now is the time.

The federal government just announced close to $130 million across 56 projects to advance Canada's forest sector β€” and several of those projects are right here in Ontario.

Here's what was funded:
🌲 Forest Innovation β€” $37M to increase use of low-value and residual forest fibre in BC; $16.6M to FPInnovations for automation, AI, and digital transformation across the sector
πŸ—οΈ Mass Timber & Construction β€” $4.8M to Intelligent City Inc. (GTA, Ontario) to establish large-scale mass timber housing production of up to 1,000 units annually; $4M to ELEMENT5 LP (St. Thomas, Ontario) to modernize mass timber manufacturing with AI-assisted lumber grading
🏭 Ontario Manufacturing β€” $7.5M to Daiken North America Ltd. (Huntsville, Ontario) to retrofit an existing facility and produce next-generation engineered wood panels
🌍 Export Market Diversification β€” $14.9M to Canada Wood Group and $13M to BC Forestry Innovation Investment to expand Canadian wood into Japan, South Korea, China, India, Europe and beyond
🀝 Indigenous Forestry β€” Multiple projects across Ontario supporting Indigenous-led forestry enterprises, capacity building, and land stewardship

This investment signals a clear federal priority: modernize the forest sector, reduce carbon emissions, expand export markets, and grow Indigenous participation β€” all at the same time.

If your business operates in construction, wood manufacturing, clean technology, or Indigenous enterprise and you're wondering what federal funding is available to you β€” that's exactly what we help Ontario SMEs figure out.

πŸ’‘ Federal funding moves fast. Knowing where to look is half the battle.

The Build Communities Strong Fund – Local Impact Stream supports small-scale community infrastructure projects β€” new construction, renovation, climate retrofits, and replacements β€” with up to $1 million available per project.

Eligible applicants include municipal and regional governments, Indigenous governments and non-profits, and community-based organizations. If your project is shovel-ready and delivers clear public benefit, this program was designed for you.

The Government of Canada has stated that priority will be given to projects ready to proceed quickly. Waiting is not a strategy here.

The federal government just launched a new loan program for Canadian airlines facing rising fuel costs β€” and the details matter for anyone watching how Ottawa responds to economic pressure on Canadian industries.

Here's what was announced:
✈️ The Liquidity for Airline Sector Resilience facility will offer eligible Canadian airlines up to $150 million in repayable liquidity support through the Canada Enterprise Emergency Funding Corporation (CEEFC).

β›½ This builds on existing relief measures, including the temporary removal of the federal fuel excise tax from April 20 to September 7, 2026 β€” reducing costs by 4 cents per litre on aviation fuel.

Airlines receiving support must commit to Buy Canadian, protect Canadian jobs, maintain domestic operations, and restrict executive compensation and dividends.

This program is targeted at large carriers β€” not SMEs. But it signals something important: when Canadian industries face real financial pressure, the federal government moves quickly with structured support.

If you're an SME owner wondering what funding programs exist for your business right now β€” that's exactly what we help with.

πŸ’‘ Government funding isn't just for big corporations. SMEs have options too.
