IRCC Explains: How do category-based Express Entry invitations work?
Many candidates wonder how IRCC decides who receives an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence. Hereβs a simple breakdown:
β
IRCC chooses the type of invitation round
β
They determine how many candidates they need
β
They identify the highest-ranking eligible candidates in the pool
β
Invitations are issued to apply for permanent residence
There are 3 types of Express Entry invitation rounds:
πΉ General Rounds
Open to top-ranking candidates eligible under any of the 3 Express Entry programs.
πΉ Program-Specific Rounds
Target candidates eligible for a specific program, such as the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).
πΉ Category-Based Rounds
Designed to meet Canadaβs economic and labour market needs by inviting candidates with specific skills, occupations, language abilities, or other targeted qualifications.
π Remember: To be considered for a category-based draw, you must first qualify for one of the Express Entry programs and have an active profile in the pool.
