Ever wonder why your child's adult tooth hasn't come in yet?

The tooth may have developed in an abnormal position, preventing normal eruption. This condition is known as an impacted tooth. It commonly affects the wisdom teeth, and the adult canine teeth.

Treatment of impacted teeth in late adolescence or early adulthood is complex and lengthy. We try to avoid this situation with early orthodontic screening and simple interceptive treatment. If all else fails, comprehensive orthodontic treatment can still rescue these otherwise lost teeth!

Pictured below is a complex case where both the adult left canine and second premolar teeth are impacted. With appropriate treatment and a bit of patience, these teeth were eventually guided into positions where braces were applied!

Question: When’s a good time to see the orthodontist?

Answer: The first visit should be by age 7. Children mature differently, and it is not uncommon to see 2 year ranges in dental development!

Not every child needs early intervention, but in certain cases it could mean the difference between needing to extract teeth or jaw surgery in the future.

Here’s a case where early intervention allowed treatment of the severe crowding to fit the blocked out teeth into the dental arches.

Why did your orthodontist ask you to wear elastics?
a) they want to make your life miserable
b) to make your life more challenging
c) to make sure you get a good bite at the end

Answer: C!

Braces or Invisalign alone are sometimes unable to get you a nice solid bite. The elastics help guide the teeth together, for solid fit at the end. Common scenarios are for overbites and underbites.

Make sure to take them out before you eat, and when you remove them from your teeth, throw them away and replace with new ones!

Here's a case where elastics showed their magic! The large gap between the front teeth is called excess overjet (often called "overbite" by people) was fixed by diligent use of elastics.

So if you were asked to use the elastics, make sure you wear them!

Underbites! This condition (also known as class III) often manifests with the lower teeth sitting more forward than normal relative to the upper teeth. An issue with the jaw(s) is often the major contributor to underbites.
