A lot of people are shocked when I tell them I grow eucalyptus right here on the Canadian prairies, but it’s true! I even wrote a blog post about how to grow it in Alberta a few years back.

You probably already know about the refreshing scent of eucalyptus, but did you know it’s also a valuable ingredient in skincare? One of my other favourite uses for it is as a herbal steam when someone in my family comes down with a cold.

Wild roses are a star of summer on the prairies, but did you know that the “fruit” (aka rose hips) they produce in the fall are packed with vitamin C?

Any other small business owners realize they were way too hard on themselves in the beginning? I sure was.

I expected a level of perfection and “balance” (which I’m now convinced isn’t really a thing) that was totally unrealistic for where I was at in my life, and in my business.

Today, Prairie Soap Shack is a thriving handmade business that specializes in wildcrafted and homegrown soap bars and natural skincare, but that evolution has come from nearly a decade of trial, error, learning, growth, and community.

If you’re reading this and just starting out as a maker or business owner…please be gentle with yourself. You’re going to figure it out…it just takes time. And don’t forget to have fun along the way! 🌱

And the icing on the cake (or foam on the pop) is that it actually smells like root b**r too!!!

This is definitely one of my favourite seasonal creations this year!

If you’re getting out foraging and wildcrafting this fall, don’t forget to look down… It’s root season!

Fall is the perfect time to harvest things like dandelion root, echinacea root, or burdock root. We recently harvested a bunch of wild sarsaparilla root for our upcoming Root B**r Soap bar in our fall collection!

And in case you needed a reminder, it’s always a good idea to try and learn from the plants. Maybe we should be thinking about putting our energy deep into our roots for the winter, too. 🌲
