This time of year I’m in the garden as much as I’m in the shop. This standardized Wisteria ( sinensis) has been putting on a great show each spring for us. And the fragrance ! Wow.

Our tv docu series “ Coastal Carvings” season one, has been nominated for best original music by the Canadian Screen Awards.

The is 19 inch /48cm piece I’m preparing for a commission piece. The beginning and the finished back of the piece .

Another of the smaller turned and embellished pieces for the gallery. 9.5 cm

Creating some smaller turnings with some west coast scenes added. These will be featured in a new addition room to Coastal Carving’s fine art gallery that will feature a number of different smaller art pieces.

This ornamental waterfall design has been turned from a highly figured maple burl, with added finial of maple and rosewood Burl. Stained with multiple layers of dye then lacquered.

With four coats of finish on the maple top now, this will be a lovely durable finish that shows off the beautiful natural grain in this big leaf maple piece. Having the same finish on our own island maple top, we have used this for everything from rolling out dough ( food safe once cured) to morning coffee. I’m undecided on legs for this piece so if someone is interested in purchasing this I can accommodate proper height legs, or? 58 x 31 x 2 inches in size.

With a first coat of Watco Butcher block oil and finish , the warmth of the maple is really coming together.
I will continue to add further coats and lightly sand until I have a nice solid sheen. This is a hard, food safe surface ( not oily) that has proven durable and quite beautiful.

A new project. Took some of my narrower planks of dry big leaf maple , planed, edged, doweled and glue to make a bar/ table top. Thanks to my friend Gary for the use of his planer and joinery skills, now it’s all about sanding and finish prep. Then, mounting to an awesome black steel set of legs.
