The Agriculture Sustainability Studies for Economic and Social
Success (ASSESS) Research Team's goal is to help producers make
informed data-driven decisions and to find long-term success. Located on the Dalhousie Agriculture Campus in the Business and Social Sciences department, our focus is on how to improve how research can be applied and turned into information that farmers can use to make informed strategic business decisions.

Meet Jocelyn, our student highlight this week!!

Jocelyn is a fourth year IFB student, originally from Calgary Alberta! She doesn’t come from a family of agriculture but has always had a passion for food and business and she absolutely loves the outdoors and traveling! Moving out east for school was her first time this far east in Canada and she has loved it the last couple of years. Her second year was in the Netherlands since that’s what the program required at the time since it’s a dual degree and a big reason why she joined. Jocelyn’s dad’s side of the family is from there so she enjoyed every minute of it and plans to go back and work in Europe once she graduates.

Jocelyn’s days are spent going to different cafes in town and the campus library to get her course work done and enjoy the town as much as she can. Going to cafes to work and exploring cities is one of her favourite hobbies. One of her favourite places to work on campus is our Collin’s greenhouse, it’s so warm and cozy.

With such a small class program, Jocelyn has been able to make life long friends both in Canada and in the Netherlands. She is so excited to graduate and see where life takes everyone and where she can get her foot into the food business world! Jocelyn’s dream is to open a cafe/bakery one day but she has a passion for how our food affects our bodies so anything in that realm will make her happy. And she has a love for marketing.

Meet Esther, one of our student highlights this week!

Agriculture has always been more than a field of study for Esther, it is a foundation that has shaped her values, interests, and career aspirations. Esther is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Technology in Small Business Management at Dalhousie University.

Growing up surrounded by farming, Esther developed a deep appreciation for the hard work, innovation, and care that goes into producing food. Studying business management has allowed her to explore how strategic decision-making, leadership, and innovation can strengthen food systems and support sustainable agriculture.
Esther says Dalhousie’s Agricultural Campus (Dal AC) has been an inspiring place to grow both academically and personally. She has had hands-on exposure to modern agricultural machinery and technology. These experiences have shown her how technology and mechanization can improve efficiency, sustainability, and productivity insights. She knows it will be invaluable in her future career.

One of Esther’s proudest achievements has been working on a rice project, where she applied her agricultural knowledge alongside research and problem-solving skills. She was honored to be selected by the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO) Mwea to be among the seed merchants for Komboka (IR05N221) rice, an opportunity that allowed her to engage directly in research-driven crop production and contribute to the distribution of high-quality rice seeds. This experience not only strengthened her skills in agriculture and innovation but also gave her a real sense of how her work can make a tangible impact on farmers and communities.

It's a red ribbon for Ag Business student Savannah who figured she'd better take the opportunity to participate in College Royal now since it's her last year... Although she wished she had participated sooner since she's got a taste for the winners circle now!
