None of it happens alone.

As our season draws to a close on June 30, we invite you to help bring the next generation of Canadian opera to life.

Because behind every bold new work is someone who chose to believe in it first.

"It was impossible to convince anybody that she wasn't mad."
Librettist Hannah Moscovitch.

When trailblazing journalist Nellie Bly went undercover in 1887, she assumed she would be surrounded by insanity. Instead, she found women discarded by a society that preferred them silenced. When Nellie dropped her "mad act" to tell the doctors the truth? They used her sanity as proof of mental illness.

The award-winning 10 DAYS IN A MADHOUSE subverts centuries of operatic history and turns the camera around on the audience, asking a chilling question: Whose speech gets read as mad, and who gets to decide who is believed?

Brought to life by an incredible creative team and a stellar cast including Mireille Asselin, Soprano and Taylor-Alexis DuPont, this is a masterful, gut-wrenching 90 minutes of musical suspense.

Don’t miss this limited Canadian Premiere, opening in just THREE weeks.

When her mother dies, an adult Sophia confronts half-forgotten traumas from her childhood growing up under the shadow of war. A young Sophia and her sister Emma attempted to escape their grim circumstances – the adult world of violence, death and displacement – through the lens of fairy tales. As the fighting drew nearer, their family was forced to flee their home and make a dangerous journey into a forest. Sophia’s child’s-view version of their flight includes mystical horrors. But as Sophia tried to protect Emma from the evil in the forest, she made a fatal mistake that forever changed the course of their lives.

Sophia's Forest (Lembit Beecher & Hannah Moscovitch) premiered in 2017 at Drexel University's Black Box Theatre in Philadelphia, USA.

“Stay alseep, I can love you when you're sleeping.”
