When we speak about pet loss, the discussion often begins and ends with grief. But for many pet parents, the experience is far more complex than that.
It can involve making impossible decisions, navigating uncertainty, experiencing sudden or traumatic loss, facing a lack of understanding from others, and trying to find support in a world that often fails to recognize the significance of the bond we share with our beloved pets.
These realities often shape the grief that follows and influence how people experience life after loss.
This post communicated a few of the complexities of pet loss that deserve far more attention than they currently receive 🤍

Cats and dogs may be different in countless ways, but for the pet parents who love them, the bond they create is often remarkably similar.
They become part of our routines, our families, our identities, and our stories. They greet us at the door, sit beside us during difficult days, celebrate life’s happiest moments, and leave their mark on our hearts in ways that can be difficult to put into words.
At The Parted Paw, we spend a lot of time speaking with pet parents who love their pets deeply.
Whether that pet is a cat, a dog, or another beloved companion, the relationship is often far more significant than many people realize 🤍

There are a lot of videos online that say we don’t talk about pet loss and the grief that follows.
At The Parted Paw, we do.
We talk about grief, loss, anticipatory grief, and the experience of saying goodbye. We talk about the love we have for our pets and the challenges that can arise throughout their lives. We talk about difficult diagnoses, quality of life concerns, family dynamics, decision-making, guilt, uncertainty, and the questions that often come up when things don’t go as planned.
We talk about the parts of pet parenthood that can feel overwhelming, complicated, and isolating, as well as the joy, connection, and meaning that make our relationships with pets so significant 🤍

Grief that follows the loss of a beloved pet is rarely one dimensional.
It often feels heavy and overwhelming one day, uncertain the next, and then unexpectedly filled with love, gratitude, or hope 3 days later.
Just as grief isn’t one emotion, it’s made up of many experiences that reflect the depth of the bond shared.
This post discusses five colours of grief and the meaning they can hold after loss 🤍

Thank you to Anke Herman for inviting me onto the Soul Touched by Dogs podcast for such a thoughtful discussion about pet loss, grief, and the human experience of loving and losing a beloved pet.
Every podcast, interview, media representation, and discussion helps bring greater awareness to something every pet parent will eventually face. Pet loss is not separate from the experience of sharing our lives with pets. It is an integral part of that journey, yet it remains one of the least discussed and least understood aspects of pet parenthood.
The more openly we talk about grief, loss, anticipatory grief, and the profound impact our pets have on our lives, the more opportunities we create for support, education, and meaningful change. These discussions help normalize an experience that millions of people navigate, often feeling alone.
I am grateful to Anke for creating space for this discussion and for helping bring greater visibility to a topic that touches so many lives.

It’s always a good day to share a memory of my sweet Georgia Girl (2010 - 2023 💙🌈)
This is the exact moment G decided that little Zelda could stay with us in our hearts and in our home.
Today this memory made me smile, 2 years ago it was a source of great tears and source of sadness.
Memories like this remain a powerful reminder that grief changes, it evolves, and hopefully, one day, can become a source of peaceful, loving memory along the way 🤍

The life pet parents share with their beloved pet is made up of thousands of moments that exist long before loss enters the picture.
It is built through companionship, trust, comfort, laughter, adventure, and the countless ways our pets become part of our daily lives and the stories of our lives.
When the time comes to say goodbye, the grief is profound because the relationship was profound. Yet the ending does not erase everything that came before it.
The love, memories, lessons, and experiences remain part of us, shaping who we are long after our pets are gone.
There is a saying that getting a pet is signing up for the greatest heartbreak of your life. While there is so much truth in the reality, that saying goodbye to a beloved pet is one of the most painful experiences we face, it is also part of a much larger story 🤍
