The land of the living skies 🌌ðŸŒū

Photos from Jake Graham Photography's post 12/10/2020

BC's Salish Sea is so full of life... especially during the herring spawn each year. Earlier this year, I was lucky enough to see the cloudy spawn turn the ocean bright blue overnight.

Luckily, the section of coastline during the spawn was small, so the fishery did not interfere in this specific location, allowing us to observe natural sea lion behaviours. They feasted on herring and rafted together, burping and barking for hours.

However, the story across the rest of BC is much different. A few days later we witnessed the flotilla of commercial fishing boats on the water. Much of the British Columbia coastline has already been closed to commercial fishing due to the herring population collapse.

As the country with the world's longest coastline, commercial fishing and open net fish farms have got to go - it is up to us to set a good example for all other coastal nations.

Scale is of the utmost importance.

Without it, we'd think the CN Tower was the centre of the universe...

Floating on cloud nine ðŸŒē☁ïļ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

One of those dream-like moments that you come to expect from a place like Alberta. Feeling very fortunate to have made it to this iconic location before the invasive mountain pine beetle did, killing thousands of these pristine pines in its path. Last fall, during a return trip to the area, my suspicions were confirmed as the trees on the world-famous Spirit Island have now begun to die, turning reddish brown instead of their typical dark greens.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This weekend, I will be re-launching my online print shop, including a handful of images from this iconic Canadian location. More info coming very soon!

Early morning at Spirit Island. Since this visit, the trees on Alberta's iconic island have started dying, turning red and brown due to the invasive pine beetle. Get out there and enjoy pristine places while we've still got them!

A few moments from my first total eclipse, an experience I'm still in awe of, years later.

This area of Oregon was battling bad wildfires in the days leading up to the eclipse, so access to the area I'd intended to go became quite difficult with all the road closures. Thankfully I ended up on a forest service road with an amazing lookout across toward Mt Jefferson (seen in photo two) which made the final days of anticipation that much more enjoyable.

Strangers quickly became friends as others arrived to camp out for the big show. "Eclipse chasers" told stories of past experiences and I quickly knew I'd become hooked to chasing these rare celestial events just like them.

These fleeting moments of light & darkness are incredibly impactful. If you've ever got the chance to experience totality, do it. Every bit of extra effort to get to the path of totality will be rewarded exponentially.

There's plenty of magic in this world, we've all just gotta make the time to slow down and appreciate it.

Have a great weekend everyone! @ Planet Earth

In 2020, I challenge you to explore more of the country/province/state you live within. While it feels special to travel by passport, defaulting to international travel often comes at the expense of seeing your own home (and the planet).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I used to count countries visited as if passport stamps meant something, but I can assure you that there remain plenty of gems hiding in plain sight, wherever you call home.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This was taken in my home province of Ontario, and thankfully my home province and country are quite large... making it near impossible to become bored with what this country has to offer. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What close to home destination do you vow to finally visit in 2020?

In search of places like these. Get out there and enjoy the beauty of winter and remember... there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing and preparation.

A few short years ago, I would have told you winter was my least favourite season... but that's changed. Learning to accept the cold, layer properly and embrace the uniqueness of winter now has me looking forward to the deep freeze each year.

With limited daylight hours, choosing between all the winter activities can be difficult: snowshoeing through the forest, playing hockey on the lake, many different types of skiing, snowmobiling, snowball fights, sledding, stargazing and more.

How do you plan to embrace winter this year? Don't be afraid to try something you've never done! @ Alberta

What is your dream wildlife encounter?

For me, swimming and photographing alongside these 🐎s while freediving off of Hawaii might be my choice. Getting in the water before the tourist boats started for the day and being the only people in the water with these wild dolphins was a pretty surreal experience.
