Alocasias naturally shed older leaves. ๐ As a leaf ages, the plant can reabsorb useful nutrients from it before eventually letting it go. An occasional older leaf yellowing and dying is completely normal.
But if your Alocasia ๐๐ข๐ก๐ฆ๐ง๐๐ก๐ง๐๐ฌ loses an older leaf every time a new one appears โ and its overall leaf count never increases โ I wouldnโt automatically dismiss it as โjust an Alocasia thing.โ ๐
A plant can only maintain the foliage its current conditions and resources can support. ๐ฑ
โ๏ธ ๐๐๐๐๐ง โ insufficient light means less energy available to support a larger canopy.
๐ฑ ๐ฅ๐ข๐ข๐ง ๐๐๐๐๐ง๐ โ a compromised or undersized root system may struggle to supply enough water and nutrients to all of the foliage.
๐ง ๐ช๐๐ง๐๐ฅ๐๐ก๐ โ repeated drought stress or chronically wet roots can both contribute to premature leaf decline.
๐งช ๐ก๐จ๐ง๐ฅ๐๐ง๐๐ข๐ก โ Alocasias are active feeders. Nutrient deficiencies or an inadequate feeding routine can limit sustained growth.
๐ก๏ธ ๐๐ก๐ฉ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ก๐ ๐๐ก๐ง โ temperature changes, acclimation, repotting and other stresses can temporarily cause a plant to prioritize newer growth over older foliage.
And ๐ ๐๐ง๐จ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐ฌ matters too. A small corm or juvenile plant simply cannot support the same number of leaves as a well-established plant with a substantial root system.
๐ฟ One old leaf fading occasionally? Normal. โ
Repeatedly gaining one and losing one without progressing? Thatโs when I start looking at the growing conditions instead of blaming the Alocasia. ๐
How does yours behave โ does it steadily increase its leaf count, or does it seem stuck in a constant replacement cycle? ๐

If you notice tiny dark bugs crawling or floating around your self-watering reservoir or corm propagation container, there's a good chance you're looking at springtails โ not thrips.
๐ง Springtails love moisture. Reservoirs, moist substrate, moss and propagation containers can be perfect environments for them. They mainly feed on fungi, algae, biofilm and decaying organic matter rather than healthy plant tissue.
๐ Not sure? Give the container a gentle tap. If those little bugs suddenly jump, that's a very good clue they're springtails. Their ability to spring away is exactly how they got their name.
๐ Thrips behave differently. They feed on plant tissue, so you'll usually be looking for them โ and their damage โ on the foliage, particularly tender new growth and the undersides of leaves.
An occasional thrips could end up in a reservoir or substrate, but a population of tiny bugs living around the water is much more likely to be springtails.
๐ ๐ก๐ผ๐ ๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ ๐ฏ๐๐ด ๐ถ๐ ๐ฎ ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐๐. Before reaching for a treatment, figure out who you're dealing with first.
