An activist priest’s sermons remind us that one of the first social justice frameworks was the Bible.

When lifelong activist and celebrated author Maggie Helwig became an Anglican priest, she brought both her hard-earned social justice wisdom and her incomparable literary prowess to the role. Where the homily – the weekly act of taking biblical texts and making them speak to one's time, place, and community – can easily become a rote exercise, Helwig takes the language and narrative very seriously. The homilies in this book, selected from those presented to her congregation over the last five years, talk about the Bible, and by extension, the world, through both an activist and a literary lens.

‘Instructions for the End of the World’ is how Helwig describes the gospels. As we live through the climate crisis and the rise of fascism around the world, Helwig’s responses to the ancient texts feel urgent and necessary, reminders of hope and meaning during a time of great anxiety and fear. Whether you’re religious or not, these homilies offer a basis for resistance and resources for building communities that may sustain us all.

'[Instructions for the End of the World] provides an antidote to the Christian nationalism that so often dominates the public conversation in North America. Canon Helwig returns to Christianity’s roots as an outsider movement – a faith found not in the halls of power, but in the margins.' – Martha Holmen, The Anglican

Have you been to one of our in-store author events yet? They're more than just readings! They include Q&As and group discussions that lead to lively conversations. Join us to meet local authors and like-minded readers!

Coming up at the end of June: a reading and discussion with Ian Cosh, author of Ghosts of Ortona: Reckoning with the Trauma of Canadian WWII Veterans.

This unusual, absorbing book is part memoir, part oral history, part psychological detective story. As a young anthropologist, Ian Cosh set out to document memories of a little-known but costly World War II battle fought over Christmas in the Italian town of Ortona. In the veterans' stories, he encountered puzzling details—hints of things unspoken and unresolved. Years later, he returned to his field notes and interview transcripts, determined to understand what was missed.

The Caversham community loves his Dr. Schubiner's books! People from around the world have requested his Unlearn Your Pain and Unlearn Your Anxiety workbooks and now...(drumroll)

Unlearn Your Pain: The Science of Recovering from Chronic Pain, Fatigue, Anxiety and Depression
..has arrived!

Migraines, headaches, back pain, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue, and a host of other chronic illnesses have crippled the modern American population. For the past twenty years, Dr. Howard Schubiner has been conducting clinical trials and authoring more than 100 scientific papers and lectures to get to the root cause of how to reverse these insidious illnesses. In Unlearn Your Pain, he shares in inspiring and step-by-step detail the program steeped in the latest neuroplasticity research that has proven most effective in treating chronic pain, anxiety, and depression. The source of much of chronic pain is neurological and the book details a revolutionary program to better health that has saved thousands from a lifetime of misery and depression.

Using the latest practices in the mind-body connection, all confirmed by clinical trials and studies, Dr. Schubiner leads readers to a new understanding of how the mind affects our pain, physical and emotional, and how we can gain control over our bodies and minds to live a healthier and better life.

Coming up later this month at Caversham:

An afternoon of insights and practical information for neurodivergent young people, and anyone interested in better understanding and accommodating their needs

Rosemary Richings, author of Stumbling Through Space and Time: Living Life With Dyspraxia, and the forthcoming Studying With Dyspraxia, will give a presentation on navigating school and the workforce as a neurodivergent person.

About Studying With Dyspraxia: "Students will gain a more in-depth understanding of what reasonable adjustments could be available to them, and how they can benefit from them. They will also learn how to articulate their needs to university professionals and teaching staff. A core objective of the book is to help students become effective self-advocates: people who effectively communicate their needs and make decisions based on their needs and interests."

Accessibility: Rosemary will provide a sensory support table (quiet tools for regulation and focus). Attendees will be free to leave and come back, or move around the room, while the event is in progress.

Everyone is welcome. You do not have to read the book to participate and make new friends.

Not to boast ( hee hee ), but our regulars love our monthly meets.

Like The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, this is a fascinating voyage into a strange and wonderful land, a provocative meditation on communication, biology, adaptation, and culture. In Seeing Voices, Oliver Sacks turns his attention to the subject of deafness, and the result is a deeply felt portrait of a minority struggling for recognition and respect—a minority with its own rich, sometimes astonishing, culture and unique visual language, an extraordinary mode of communication that tells us much about the basis of language in hearing people as well. Seeing Voices is, as Studs Terkel has written, "an exquisite, as well as revelatory, work."

‘We often don’t realise the hurt we’re causing’

A groundbreaking approach to parenting that presents emotional maturity as the foundation for happy, resilient, successful children—from the clinical psychologist behind the New York Times bestseller Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents

“The wake-up call every parent needs.”—Mel Robbins, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Let Them Theory and host of The Mel Robbins Podcast

Emotional maturity is the single most important quality a parent can help develop in their child—it enables a person to function autonomously, handle stress, flourish in diverse environments, form lasting relationships, and achieve personal and professional success.

In How to Raise an Emotionally Mature Child, Lindsay C. Gibson explains the cognitive, psychological, and social challenges children face, from forming strong attachments during infancy to dealing with emotions and achievement in early school age to establishing personal identity in the teenage years. At each stage, she offers compassionate guidance to help parents support their child’s emotional development through the lens of the Seven Parental Mindsets for Maturity, including:

• My Child Is a Unique Individual With Their Own Interests
• My Child is Vulnerable and Requires Protection
• My Child Has Psychological and Emotional Needs That Must Be Met

Identifying common traps and behaviors to avoid and explaining why striving to be a “perfect parent” is impossible and unhealthy, this book helps parents nurture their children’s emotional maturity—and feel good while doing it.

Are you intrigued by the imagery of tarot cards? Have you incorporated Inner Active cards, or similar decks, into your therapeutic practice? Do you like drawing and crafting? We think you might love this workshop! Check the In-Store Events link in our bio to register.

"In this interactive workshop, you’ll craft a personalized oracle card, using imagery and symbols that resonate with you.

With a light introduction to archetypes and symbolism, we’ll approach imagery as a mirror for self-reflection, exploring thoughts, emotions, motivations, and subconscious patterns.

The cards you create can become tools for ongoing insight, supporting practices like parts work (IFS) or shadow work in an accessible, creative way.

We’ll wrap up with a lively group reading where everyone interprets the cards and shares the story behind their creations."
