Pashupatinath Mandir Canada - NCHC
To students who came in 2022 / 2023
I sometimes wonder how many of us imagined Canada before we actually got here.
We arrived carrying more than suitcases. We carried plans, expectations, and a picture of the life we thought was waiting for us.
Then we got here and reality was different. Finding a room was stressful, scams seemed to be everywhere and everything was so expensive. On one side, there was the happiness of finally being in Canada. On the other side, there was the stress of finding a part-time job. Then came assignments, classes, bills, work, and trying to figure everything out in a completely new country. It was a lot.
But somewhere in all that uncertainty, something beautiful happened.
We found people.
People who were strangers at first, then became the ones we called at midnight. The ones we walked around with for no reason, shared drinks with, helped with assignments, complained about work with, laughed with, and leaned on when things felt a little too heavy.
Some of those people are still here. Some are far away now. Some simply became strangers again.
And now, almost three years later, weтАЩve learned so much about life, people, friendship and things we probably never would have learned if we had stayed home.
Looking back, it was messy, difficult, beautiful, and unforgettable.
To everyone who came in 2022 & 2023, wherever life has taken you, I hope youтАЩre doing well. We may have arrived as strangers, but we will always share that first chapter.

Sometimes, when I hear that someone is going back to Nepal, I genuinely feel happy for them. I imagine their excitement, the moment they land, seeing their family, eating homemade food, meeting old friends. For a moment, I put myself in their place and think тАЬI wish that were me.тАЭ
But then reality is strange.
I have the money. I could take time off. Nothing is really stopping me. Yet, I donтАЩt go. Every year, I tell myself, тАЬMaybe next year.тАЭ And somehow, next year never comes.
The hardest part is when someone asks, тАЬWhy donтАЩt you just go?тАЭ
I never really have an answer. Not because IтАЩm hiding something, but because I honestly donтАЩt know. There are feelings inside that are difficult to express. Something quietly keeps pulling me away, even when a part of me misses home.
I wonder, have we become too comfortable with this foreign life? Too caught up in work, money, responsibilities, and the life weтАЩve built here? or is it something deeper?
Maybe we donтАЩt feel proud enough of where we are in life to stand in front of our family, relatives or old friends. Maybe we're afraid of the questions they'll ask or of comparing ourselves to the expectations we once had. ItтАЩs a strange feeling, missing home, yet finding reasons not to go.
