Thinking about using Better Jobs Ontario to fund your home inspection training?

Better Jobs Ontario is a provincial program that helps eligible Ontarians retrain for careers in high demand fields. Funding may cover tuition, books, and other expenses while you train.

One of the most common questions we get is: How long does the application process take?

While every situation is different, most applicants should plan for about 4 to 6 weeks from their first meeting to approval.

Our advice? Start early and gather your documents as soon as possible.

Carson Dunlop can help by providing course information, official quotes, and other documents needed to support your application.

Who you choose for a home inspection matters.

As Kevin Yu shares, working with a trusted name like Carson Dunlop brings credibility, experience, and unbiased insight to the table. Often with highly trained inspectors, even engineers, behind every report.

The result?

Fewer surprises.
Less back and forth.
Stronger, smoother deals.

When buyers trust the inspection, they are far less likely to come back asking for big price reductions.

That 1923 build year on the listing?

It may only tell part of the story.

Many Toronto homes have been added to, renovated, gutted, or rebuilt over decades. The original house may be from 1923, but the kitchen could be from 2008, the addition from 1979, the basement from 1962, and the roof from much later.

That matters.

The age of each component can tell you more about what to expect, what may need attention, and what could be nearing the end of its useful life.

A home inspector looks beyond the original build date to help you understand the real age and condition of the home.

Not sure what “deferred maintenance” means? You’re not alone.

“Deferred maintenance” is a term your inspector might use to refer to any repairs or upkeep that should have been completed earlier, but was delayed or put off. The terms does NOT imply that an item or system is completely defective. In fact, the fix is often relatively simple! The most important thing to remember is that continuing to leave maintenance items unaddressed can lead to additional issues that could cost you more down the road.

Common examples of deferred maintenance include:

📋Damaged caulking around a tub (this $20 DIY project is beginner-friendly)
📋Clogged gutters (remove the debris, and you’re good to go)
📋Peeling exterior paint (call your local professional to schedule a consultation)

What “inspector jargon” should we decode next?
