Imaging With Purpose
Photography with conservation of habitats, wildlife, and cultures in mind
Look how the mother elephant uses her knees to go from lying on the ground, to standing up; pretty cool ๐. The first time I have seen an elephant use their knees like this, was when it was coming out of a river, to climb up on the river bank, and I was stunned, because it is something that we rarely see in pictures or documentaries.

Disappointing...
โ ๏ธ Born Free is deeply disappointed by South Africaโs newly published Biodiversity Management Plan for Black and White Rhinoceroses.
While the plan includes some positive conservation measures, it also signals the governmentโs intention to pursue both domestic and international trade in rhino horn. We raised serious concerns about this approach back in 2024 - concerns that, alongside many others, appear to have been ignored.
๐ซThis direction is especially worrying given that the new Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Willie Aucamp, is a known supporter of the wildlife breeding and hunting industry. His appointment followed the removal of his predecessor, who had just initiated the long-overdue phase-out of the captive lion industry.
At a time when rhinos remain under significant threat, policies that risk fuelling demand for horn are a dangerous step backwards.

Biodiversity โthe rich variety of all life on Earth โis the very foundation upon which human civilization stands. Every ecosystem functions as an intricate web where each species plays a vital role in maintaining balance and resilience. When we lose biodiversity, we don't just lose individual species; we lose the complex ecological services they provide. Protecting a forest means safeguarding not only the trees, but also the insects that pollinate them, the birds that disperse their seeds, and the predators that maintain balance. This biological diversity creates stability, allowing ecosystems to withstand climate fluctuations and environmental changes that would otherwise cause collapse.
The preservation of biodiversity is not just an environmental concern โit is fundamental to human survival. Healthy ecosystems provide us with clean air, fresh water, fertile soil, and climate regulation that makes life possible. Over half of all medicines used today are derived from natural compounds found in nature, meaning undiscovered species could hold cures for diseases yet to be conquered. Biodiversity also sustains our food security and supports the mental and physical health of billions of people worldwide. When we protect biodiversity, we protect our own future โensuring that generations to come inherit a planet capable of sustaining all life in its magnificent forms.

National Panda Day - March 16th
The giant panda became the iconic symbol of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 1961, chosen for its universal appeal and powerful representation of conservation needs. When the organization was founded, one of the only giant pandas in the Western worldโChi-Chiโresided at the London Zoo, capturing hearts and imaginations wherever she went. Sir Peter Scott, one of WWF's founders and a renowned conservationist and artist, sketched the first panda logo, recognizing that this beloved black-and-white bear would be the perfect ambassador for wildlife conservation. The panda's gentle nature, distinctive appearance, and endangered status made it an ideal symbol to unite people across cultures and continents in the fight to protect our planet's precious biodiversity.
Giant pandas play a crucial role as an "umbrella species" in their mountain forest habitat in central China. By protecting the vast bamboo forests that pandas need to surviveโeach adult consumes up to 38 kilograms of bamboo dailyโconservationists simultaneously safeguard entire ecosystems that are home to snow leopards, red pandas, golden monkeys, and countless other species. Pandas help maintain forest health by spreading seeds throughout their range as they move and feed, promoting bamboo regeneration and forest diversity. Their conservation has led to the protection of over 67 panda reserves, preserving critical watersheds that provide fresh water to millions of people downstream. When we save the panda, we save so much moreโentire mountain ecosystems, clean water sources, and the livelihoods of local communities who depend on these forests.
