So cool 😎 A recent addition to the Open Studio community, Zach Foster has brought this awesome screenprinting carousel to the studio!

The machine allows you to print directly onto flat textiles, with multiple screens mounted around a rotating carousel. As a shared studio resource, it’s now available for Open Studio members to use, opening up new possibilities for printing on textiles. 🧵

We’re thrilled to have this new addition to the studio and excited to see what everyone creates with it! ✨

‘My Memory Echoes in You’ transforms a family archive of photographs, slides, and fading images into an installation exploring memory, place, and intergenerational histories. Opening reception tomorrow, Friday, September 11, 6-8 pm! Four exciting exhibitions are opening. Here’s a sneak peek of the work by Özge Dîlan Arslan. Arslan uses a mixture of materials, including patchworked linen, gel transfers, and screenprinted elements, to create pieces that explore the dispersed nature of an archipelago. Fragmentation and repetition shift the surface between pattern and interruption. This maritime world bears the accumulated imprint of layered histories of movement, exchange, and submersion. Tracing What the Sea Alters approaches the Aegean Sea as both subject and material condition, tracing its layered histories of movement, exchange, and submersion. Through patchworked linen, gel transfers, and screenprinted elements, fragmented imagery and shifting tonalities evoke the sea’s shifting spatial relations.

Building Blocks reconstructs eighty cardboard houses originally built and photographed as picture book illustrations. Working from the limited information that remains, the work reflects on the impulse to overbuild, and on the gaps, distortions, and losses that emerge through the process of translation.

Woven Topographies presents largely fictional ecosystems that merge Canadian flora, fauna, and fieldwork into dense, imagined landscapes that feel both familiar and unsettled. The work considers the fragile balance between biodiversity and urban expansion, and the ways that balance can be disrupted.

🙌 As summer winds down, we’re looking ahead to fall with a new lineup of printmaking courses at Open Studio.

Explore Monotype Printmaking, Stone Lithography, Photo-lithography, Line Etching on Copper, Linocut on the Vandercook Press, Photo-based Screenprinting, Screenprinting: A Posterization Approach, and Intro to Artist’s Books, with more to come.

🗒️ All courses include materials, and no prior printmaking experience is required.

Courses take place at Open Studio, Suite 104, 401 Richmond St. West in downtown Toronto. Open to participants 18 and older, or those 16 and older with a signed guardian waiver. Courses are subject to minimum enrolment.

Open Studio is looking for an Executive Director to lead Toronto’s only artist-run printmaking centre into its next chapter. You’ll oversee finances, fundraising, staff, and our studio community, working closely with our Board to support Open Studio’s growth. We’re looking for a leader with strong financial management skills and a genuine commitment to accessibility and inclusion.
