One hundred and one years after his birth, and 20 years after publication, Waddie Welcome and the Beloved Community continues to offer a vision of, and a roadmap toward, the creation of a 'beloved community'... a place where the barriers between people gradually come down and where the citizens make a constant effort to address even the most difficult problems of ordinary people. Above all else, it is an idealistic community.'

For 34 years, John’s wit, wisdom, guidance, and friendship were at the core of our Summer Institutes, where his mesmerizing stories left us all richer and wiser. On November 1, 2024, John’s passing from this earth-bound phase of his story closes a chapter where we have been privileged to spend time together, listening, learning, and eating together - for decades. We will miss his delightful turns of phrase as he entranced us with yet another metaphorical community tale. But all is not lost because untold thousands of us can recall those stories - those remarkable moments of wisdom and delight. We honour our friend and mentor. We will miss him dearly - and we will not forget.
Here is a collection of links to a fraction of John’s contributions to all of us. https://inclusion.com/change-makers-resources-for-inclusion/john-obrien-change-makers-books-videos/john-mcknight/

❄️☃️ 🌎️ We know that we alone cannot end wars and suffering or repair the damage we have already done to life on the planet. But if we choose to sit and mope, the disasters will continue to accumulate, and our misery will simply add to the black hole we are creating. Gabor Mate, a physician and best-selling author, notes that you may feel ‘disillusioned’ - but that is ok because on this journey, we must let go of Illusions and face reality.
We propose engaging with the world – with other people – with the issues that speak to our hearts. Whether global or local, the engagement itself is a life force. We and you will encounter others. Loneliness will diminish. When we feel our way into our heart’s direction, with a clear compass, new and creative possibilities might just materialize. The crisis we are in becomes a catalyst for invention. COVID demonstrated an explosion of options that were considered impossible – until we needed new choices.
So, as we enter this new year, let us choose Active Hope – engagement – with our neighbours, our communities, our world.
There are no guarantees and no magical solutions, but if we don’t try, we will never know what is possible. And in the meantime, it is a more joyful life.
✨ 💞 So choose Hope Actively – and best wishes for meaningful engagements on your journey this New Year.✨💞

📗❄️✨ It is the holiday season, and we desperately need to rediscover some Joy and good cheer. But these are difficult times, and for many of us, it is hard to conjure up the holiday spirit. That’s when we discovered a new book by Joanna Macy & Chris Johnstone, Active Hope: How to Face the Mess We’re in with Unexpected Resilience & Creative Power. It’s a great read, and this missive borrows deeply on their wisdom.
The authors frame two kinds of hope. The first involves ‘hopefulness’, which is dangerous because when blocked – it leads to hopelessness. It is passive (someone or something else will do what is necessary to give us ‘hope’). We slide into victim mode and denial (it’s too painful to consider reality). We end up frozen in despair.
Macy and Johnstone propose that we adopt the second meaning for hope - Active Hope, which focuses on our desires, our longings, our loves and passions. Without offering guarantees, Active Hope engages us as active participants on the journey in the direction of our deepest desires. It’s a better way to live – because on that journey, there are always moments and days to celebrate. Active Hope does not make false promises to ‘deliver your dreams’. Rather, it suggests that by engaging on that life expedition in your chosen direction, you will discover others who share your vision. And who knows what is possible when three or more people begin a vital odyssey together?
The remarkable thing is that we can choose which ‘hope’ we employ – regardless of the challenges we face. We can choose.
