What’s a French Drain?

💧 FRENCH DRAIN COMPONENTS & FUNCTION
🔸 Foundation Wall (Right): A concrete or masonry wall that the drainage system is designed to protect from water pressure and saturation.
🔸 Trench: The excavated area in the soil next to the foundation.
🔸 Perforated Pipe (Drain Tile): The white, corrugated pipe visible at the bottom of the trench. It has small holes (perforations) along its length, allowing water that filters down through the gravel to enter the pipe. The pipe directs this collected water away to a proper discharge point (like a storm drain, dry well, or lower grade area).
🔸 Gravel/River Rocks: The main fill material that makes up the bulk of the system. The stones are highly permeable, creating a channel for water to quickly drain vertically toward the pipe and horizontally away from the foundation. The rocks on the surface also serve as a visually pleasing ground cover.
🔸 Filter Fabric/Geotextile (Black): This fabric is used to line the trench and wrap the pipe and gravel. Its primary function is to prevent fine sediment and soil particles from migrating into the gravel and the pipe, which would clog the system over time and reduce its effectiveness.
