It's grey and rainy outside, so we are transporting ourselves back to the Early Archaic period with this beautiful Nettling projectile point! Sometime around 9000 years ago, a master knapper transformed a lump of Bois Blanc chert from the Niagara Region into this deadly little spear point. The maker would have hafted it onto a long spear or dart using animal sinew and pine pitch glue, then launched it at his prey using a spear throwing device similar to what's known as an atlatl. Imagine the feasts this little artifact may have provided! As you listen to the drizzling rain today, let your mind drift back to a time when skill and smarts were how you survived - rain or shine!

When the mercury drops and the ground gets icy, it's a great time to assess and repair!
This we are zooming in on the gang down at the equipment shop as they mend screens, build specialised tools, improve the functionality of our field gear, and prepare for an exciting new field season. Our dedicated equipment team work throughout the year to keep everything in tip-top shape with helping hands from the field directors while the snows are flying. This is just one of the ways our crews work together to keep ASI humming during the winter indoors while we look forward to getting back out into the sunshine!

The Robots are coming! This year’s First Lego League Unearthed robotics challenge for students age 9-16 has been a great success so far! Teams worked together to design, build and program a robot capable of completing 15 special archaeology-themed missions in the Robot Game.
Then, for the Innovation Project part of the challenge, teams identified, researched, and proposed a solution for a problem faced by real-life archaeologists. They were tasked with creating a prototype which demonstrated their solution.
ASI is proud to have provided guidance to over 15 teams, including Bayview Glen’s ConnecTech who won the provincial championship! Congratulations ConnecTech, we hope to see you compete at the World Championship in Houston!

Happy Family Day! Today we are celebrating by sharing some photos taken by our Cultural Heritage team of homesteads and farms in Ontario which have been passed down through families for over 100 years. Many such farms began when Ontario herself was young and have been "Home Sweet Home" for their families throughout the generations. We hope you all have time to spend with your families both born and chosen this February 16th!
