Edition 5, clip 2 of 5 🎬

Like I mentioned in the first post, This edition pushed me in ways I didn’t see coming. Had me sitting in discomfort, trusting the process without always knowing where it would land… but it opened something.

We’re now finally stepping into the festival run and I’m feeling hopeful about where these films might go 🌱 I’ll be sharing more sneak peeks over the next couple of weeks.

We already put out a call for poets for Edition 6 (and the love has been real), but I’m still open to local poets. If there’s space, I’m listening.

Grateful for everyone still growing with this 🖤

Affrica Spence () returns as a featured artist, bringing to the stage the full force of a practice that stretches across poetry, visual art, and cultural memory. Rooted in spoken word, her journey began with the simple but radical act of speaking truth out loud, a foundation that has since unfolded into filmmaking, painting, curating, and layered multimedia storytelling shaped by personal experience and ancestral reverence.

Her work carries a distinct duality, tender and cutting, intimate yet expansive. Many know her through , her poetic film series that translates spoken word into rich visual and sonic landscapes, alongside features in exhibitions and festivals such as Artscape’s Future Forward, The Real Jerk Art Feature, and Canada Shorts.

After guiding participants through a deeply immersive masterclass earlier in the week, this performance marks the final chance to witness that practice in motion. For those who missed the room where she was building, this is where you see what it becomes ✨

Edition 5 finally make its way!!

This edition took more out of me than I expected. A string of the unexpected kept interrupting the process, health scares, shrinking budgets, crew disruptions, and moments where it honestly felt like it might not come together at all. But somehow, piece by piece, we made it through. And now these films are stepping into their festival run 🌱

If you know, you know, festival circuits usually stretch close to a year, so full public release will take time but I’m quietly hoping we can arrange a small private screening like in years past 🖤

If you’re new to the project, Voetry has always been about capturing simple, lived moments and pairing them with intimate poetic confessions through spoken word. Each short film stands alone, but together they form a thread, person to person, story to story, a reminder that even wildly different lives share the same human core.

I’m deeply grateful to the team that held this through the storm, especially the core crew: Jade , Kayla , and Matthew Pompey , along with every cast member, collaborator, local organization, and company that poured energy into making this real. It truly takes a village.

And somehow… recruitment for Edition 6 is already slowly unfolding 🌿 Feeling very blessed, very tired, and very thankful.

If you’re curious and want a peek into this world, the past editions are out there waiting for you

Thank you for still being here with this project. Truly.

🖤🖤🖤🖤I was lucky enough last year to participate in an arts initiative that gave life to this little idea. I am still very much in the working stages BUT received confirmation from one of two routes to release the booklet, that they want to move forward! Simply sharing as this gets my heart fluttering by being completely new territory for and

The project is called Healing Between the Lines. It’s a gentle booklet, part poetry, part illustration, part breathing room. Made with Black women and Black folks living with mental health struggles at the centre, because so often our softness gets missed. This isn’t about fixing or arriving anywhere shiny. It’s about pausing. Colouring. Seeing full lips, round noses, coils and curls on the page and knowing you belong, can express and be seen here too.

This work comes straight out of my own intertwined relationship with the mental health system and myself. In many ways I’m through the darkest of times but I’m still figuring things out, still healing, still learning how to rest without guilt. This booklet holds space for that in-between place, the one where you’re not necessarily fully broken, just human.

If all goes well, this will be released sometime in 2026. Sharing early, sharing tenderly, and holding a lot of gratitude. From someone still healing too. Fingers crossed! canadiancreative .ca

🖤🖤🖤🖤another work from cafe kind of day. For those who don’t know, I generally get my creative on at local cafes. Today’s is while I am on the prowl for new poets!!! Interested in being part of Edition 6 of Voetry? DM me and Submit 3 or more poems. No set deadline but the sooner the better. I’m hoping to have a new lineup set by end of the month.
