We will be surveying and interviewing Transition initiative co-founders, steering committee members, and members to:

Message below from Michelle Colussi about the launch of Thrive online course:

Hi everyone! It's been so long!

I am sending you a link for the Transition US Thrive On Line course that both Sally Ludwig (T Guelph) and I are collaborating on with US trainers. Please do share with your networks!

Transition Thrive can be thought of as the sequel to Transition Launch Training. While Launch focuses on the first few steps of the Transition process - understanding the global context, forming an initiating group, raising awareness, and cultivating partnerships with like-minded organizations - Thrive builds upon this foundation to provide answers to how to broaden, deepen, and scale up the impacts of local community resilience-building initiatives over time.

Over the course of eight weekly sessions, you will form mutually-supportive relationships with other (transition) participants, develop new abilities and knowledge, receive guidance for overcoming the specific challenges you are facing, and create a robust action plan to take your work to the next level.

Prior participation in a Transition Launch Training is recommended, but not required. This course is open to social change activists from all over the world, but is currently only available in English.

The link to the Transition US Thrive page for more information is: https://www.transitionus.org/event/transition-thrive-online-training

Hope to see you on zoom this fall!

Warmly

Michelle

The emergence of the transition movement in Canada: success and impact through the eyes of initiative leaders 12/14/2018

At long last, I'm happy to announce that our article on the emergence of the Transition movement in Canada has now been published online in the journal Local Environment. Many thanks to my wonderful co-authors, research staff, and most especially to our Movement Advisory Group and the many Transition initiatives themselves who partook in the Transition Emerging Study, which we first launched in 2012.

Dear Transition community. It's come to our attention that our website is down, and that because of a mix up in payments between the university's accounting office and our web host, all the data from our website has vanished. Without a backup (I confess to having no clue how to back up an entire website) it seems that everything has been lost.

Of course we still have e-copies of some of the content (e.g. research flyers, reports, background information). But not sure that now that the project has officially ended, we can muster the resources to mount a new site from scratch.

Please feel free to email me at blake.poland[at]utoronto.ca if you'd like a copy of any of our materials, or information about the Transition Emerging Study.

New masters thesis: The journey of Canadian Transition initiatives in their quest for transformative change

Specific attention is focused on how well TIs are meeting two prerequisites for transformative change highlighted by Dumitru et al (2016): the ability to build initiatives that attract and maintain membership, and the development of effective strategies to engage with their communities.

Areas of particular concern are highlighted, including a high rate of dissolution. In addition, the study highlights characteristics which distinguish successful TIs. These include a greater tendency towards distributed leadership, self-evaluation, strategic planning, and viewing all partner groups as potential allies in the quest to build a more sustainable future.

The author discusses the implications of the Canadian context, monitoring and evaluation, engagement choices, and suggests additional areas for potentially fruitful partnerships, including health/social agencies, the business community and academia.
