“AWAKENED VOICES NARRATIVES”: Dressed in the character of Thornton Blackburn for the “Awakened Voices Narratives” play inside the “Melville United Church”; 300 St. Andrew St. West, in Fergus, ON.
*
Thornton Blackburn (1812–1890) was a self-emancipated formerly enslaved man whose case established the principle that Canada would not return slaves to their masters in the United States and thus established Canada as a safe terminus for the Underground Railroad.

Mr. Blackburn created Toronto’s first taxi service, in 1837, called “The City”. He started this service by building a red and yellow box cab named “The City,” drawn by a single horse and able to carry four passengers, with a driver in a box at the front, which he would operate. It became the nucleus of a successful taxicab company. Also, the colours of the “Toronto Transit Commission” (TTC), were inspired by The Blackburn’s original taxicabs.

Thornton Blackburn, and his wife Lucie, continued to be active in anti-slavery and community activities, helping to build the nearby “Little Trinity Church”, now the oldest-surviving church in Toronto.

“AWAKENED VOICES NARRATIVES”: Dressed in the character of Josiah Henson for the “Awakened Voices Narratives” play inside the “Melville United Church”; 300 St. Andrew St. West, in Fergus, ON.
*
Josiah Henson (June 15, 1789 – May 5, 1883) was an author, abolitionist, and minister.
Born into slavery, in Port To***co, Charles County, Maryland, he escaped to Upper Canada (now Ontario) in 1830, and founded a settlement and laborer’s school for other fugitive slaves at Dawn, near Dresden, in Kent County, Upper Canada, of Ontario.
Henson’s autobiography, “The Life of Josiah Henson, Formerly a Slave, Now an Inhabitant of Canada”, (narrated by himself), is believed to have inspired the title character of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” Following the success of Stowe’s novel, Henson issued an expanded version of his memoir, “Truth Stranger Than Fiction, Father Henson’s Story of His Own Life”. Interest in his life continued, and nearly two decades later, his life story was updated and published as “Uncle Tom’s Story of His Life: An Autobiography of the Rev. Josiah Henson”.
