The story of CLIA:

It has been an incredible journey and a remarkable transformation for our sector.

Over the past 24 years, the Canadian Language Industry Association (CLIA) has brought together professionals and organizations committed to strengthening and advancing the language industry in Canada. Along the way, we have built lasting relationships and achieved important milestones together.

Among them:

-The creation of the first National Standard for Translation Services in Canada (CAN/CGSB-131.10) and the corresponding certification framework for Translation Service Providers.

-CLIA's instrumental role in the development of the National Standard for Community Interpreting Services and the associated certification framework.

-CLIA's role as a founding member of the Ontario Council on Community Interpreting (OCCI), which later launched the Accreditation for Community Interpreters (ACI).

-Continuing to serve as the voice of the Canadian language industry and to advocate for quality, professionalism, and standards.

In this special video, the founders share the story of CLIA—the challenges, the successes, and the many milestones that have shaped our profession over the last 24 years.

Update on CGSB and CAN/CGSB-131.10 Translation Standard
I am writing to share an important update regarding the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB), specifically the Standard for Translation Services, CAN/CGSB-131.10.

As of March 31, the CGSB has ceased delivering standards development services.

As Chair of the Technical Committee, I have been in contact with CGSB representatives, who have provided initial information about the transition process currently underway. Further details are expected in the coming months.

I am pleased to confirm that the CAN/CGSB-131.10 Translation Standard has been formally extended and will remain valid until November 9, 2029.

The standard will continue to be accessible through the Government of Canada Publications website.

I recognize the importance of continuity and clarity during this transition period.

I will share updates as more information becomes available and remain committed to supporting the integrity and application of this standard.

Lost in Translation Costs More Than You Think

Most organizations don’t think of language as a RISK ...... Until it is.

Because translation isn’t really about words—it’s about decisions. And decisions are only as good as what people actually understand.

That’s where things start to be problematic...

Nothing obviously wrong. Nothing that raises a flag in the moment.

But “almost right” has a cost.

It shows up later

-In delays that shouldn’t happen.

-In a misdiagnosis

-In a legal battle that didn't need to happen

-In lost money and resources

And sometimes, in lost trust.

The challenge is that these issues are rarely traced back to language. They’re seen as operational friction, misalignment, or ex*****on gaps.

But often, they start much earlier—with a simple assumption that “this is good enough.”

And sometimes, it is.

But not always.

There is a key point to keep in mind:

Not every piece of communication carries the same weight.

The risk isn’t in moving fast.
The risk is treating everything the same.

The organizations that get this right aren’t necessarily doing more—they’re being more intentional. They’re clear on when speed matters. And when precision is non-negotiable.

And that’s usually the turning point—when language stops being reactive and starts being part of how the organization operates.

Because in the end, the biggest cost isn’t a bad translation. It’s the decisions made on top of it.
