ONE YEAR OF BILL 5: MPP MAMAKWA CALLS FOR RENEWED ACTION TO DEFEND FIRST NATIONS INHERENT AND TREATY RIGHTS
SIOUX LOOKOUT – NDP Deputy Leader and Official Opposition critic for Indigenous and Treaty Relations MPP Sol Mamakwa (Kiiwetinoong) has released the following statement on the anniversary of Bill 5 officially becoming law in Ontario:
“It’s hard to believe that one year has passed since Bill 5 received Royal Assent at the Legislature to officially become law, after weeks of strong opposition from First Nations rights holders across Ontario and many more concerned community members. In the months after it passed, the voices speaking out against Bill 5 have gotten quieter. Meanwhile, the Government has been moving forward with regulations and policy changes to put Bill 5’s provisions into effect.”
“It's not about being pro-development or anti-development. It’s about making sure that First Nations Treaty and Inherent rights are respected first and foremost. This includes the right to Free, Prior, and Informed Consent. We are seeing the federal and provincial governments use different tactics to control the timelines and parameters for consultation, while also trying divide and conquer our Nations. They are adjusting their laws to undermine First Nations and rights holders, instead of respecting the laws that are in place.”
“First Nations have lived on these lands since time immemorial, and we must remind these Governments that consent to change these lands is not a choice. It is a requirement.”
“So, as we mark one year since Bill 5 became law, I am calling for action from rightsholders and leadership across Ontario, and especially in the North. There is so much going on in our communities, but we must unite to stand up for our Treaty and Inherent rights and defend the land from developments taking place without the Free, Prior and Informed Consent of all impacted rights holders.”

ICYMI - PASMA URGES FORD AND CALANDRA TO ENSURE STABILITY FOR STUDENTS AND BARGAIN IN GOOD FAITH WITH EDUCATORS
QUEEN’S PARK – NDP Shadow Minister of Education MPP Chandra Pasma (Ottawa West – Nepean) released the following statement in response to education workers and teachers raising concerns about chronic underfunding and serving notice to bargain:
“The Ford government has created a crisis in our schools by cutting $6.4 billion in funding. Students, parents, teachers, and education workers have clearly outlined what this means for students: they are in large classes, receiving less support, in schools that aren’t safe.
“Teachers and education workers have been saying for months that they are ready to address these issues at the bargaining table, ready to work with the government to achieve better learning and working conditions for our kids and the caring adults who support them every day.
“So far, the Minister has refused to come to the table and start bargaining in good faith. Now is the time for him to do that. Ontario students can’t afford more chaos and more cuts. The Ford government should immediately invest in our schools and work with educators to develop fair contracts that address the many challenges in education today.”

ICYMI - Legislature closes early - not back until October 27th!! That's a 21 WEEK summer break!
NDP: FORD HEADS INTO SUMMER AFTER A 30-DAY LEGISLATIVE SESSION
QUEEN’S PARK — Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles blasted Doug Ford for heading off on another extended summer vacation, after spending just 30 days in the Ontario Legislature.
“The Ontario Legislature sat for just 30 days this session,” said Stiles. “Doug Ford spent that time buying himself a private jet and changing the law to hide his phone records.
“While we were fighting to make life affordable for Ontario families, Doug Ford gutted OSAP, voted against banning surveillance pricing, and against scrapping the HST on food, putting grocery giants’ profits ahead of the people.
“Doug Ford had a choice this session: helping himself or helping the people of Ontario. He chose himself every single time.
“While the people of Ontario are choosing between groceries, gas, and rent, Doug Ford was focused on wasting taxpayer dollars.
“The Premier can spend the summer at his cottage. We’ll spend that time fighting for a more affordable Ontario.”

NDP: FORD’S BILLY BISHOP EXPANSION IS ALL FOR WALL STREET
QUEEN’S PARK — Marit Stiles, Leader of the Official Opposition, has released the following statement in response to reporting by the Toronto Star that revealed a company closely connected to American corporate investment firm JP Morgan is behind the push to expand Billy Bishop Airport:
“Does Doug Ford work for the people or does he work for Wall Street,” said Stiles. “Nobody wants this project, and now we know that the only winner here is an American investment bank.
“While we have been fighting to scrap the tax on food and put money back in people’s pockets, Doug Ford has been busy trying to destroy Toronto’s waterfront to make money for investment bankers.
“Prime Minister Mark Carney can put an end to Doug Ford’s chaos. This project does not move forward unless the Prime Minister rubber stamps it. Prime Minister, you have the opportunity to stand up for Canadians against American interests. Canada and our waterfront are not for sale.”
“Captain Canada has betrayed the people of Ontario,” added MPP Chris Glover (Spadina—Fort York). “Doug Ford ran on a promise of protecting our province from Donald Trump and threats from the United States, only to immediately sell Ontario out to American corporations behind closed doors.
“Our sovereignty has repeatedly been threatened by the United States, but that apparently won’t stop the Premier from allowing this American investment bank to destroy our waterfront, with jets landing every two and a half minutes. Prime Minister Carney and his Toronto MPs need to finally take a stand, and stop the Premier’s reckless expansion.”

NDP: DOUG FORD FORCES THROUGH HIS TORONTO ISLAND TAKEOVER
QUEEN’S PARK — Official Opposition Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles, and Spadina—Fort York MPP Chris Glover blasted the Ford government for plowing ahead with its nonsensical Billy Bishop Airport expansion following the passage of Bill 110:
“This is shameful,” said Stiles.
“Nobody wants this project. While people struggle to make ends meet, Doug Ford is more focused on lighting tax dollars on fire with vanity projects that no one asked for.
“Doug Ford’s unhealthy obsession with downtown Toronto is costing the people of Ontario. While families up north wait for a doctor and risk their lives on unsafe highways, Ford is busy seizing the Toronto islands for his buddies to land luxury jets.”
“Doug Ford and Mark Carney are taking taxpayers for a ride. They’re costing Ontarians $900 per household for a completely unnecessary airport expansion,” said Glover.
“We know that there is no business case for this. The Minister of Transportation couldn’t provide any proof that this project even made sense at committee. With Pearson expanding to accommodate an additional 23 million passengers per year, a $5 billion expansion at Billy Bishop is completely unnecessary.
“This project does nothing for the people of Ontario, but it does deliver for corporations making windfall profits. Ontarians will lose the chance to build thousands of affordable housing units and risk the destruction of our waterfront and the Toronto Islands.
“The Premier has shown that he won’t listen to the people of Ontario. It’s up to the Prime Minister and his Toronto MPs to step in, and act upon the will of their constituents. Mark Carney has the power to stop the destruction of Toronto’s waterfront.”

MPP TABUNS INTRODUCES PRIVATE MEMBER’S BILL TO PREPARE ONTARIO FOR HOTTER TEMPERATURES
QUEEN’S PARK ~ Ontario NDP Shadow Environment Minister Peter Tabuns (Toronto Danforth) introduced a private member’s bill today, Adapting to a hotter Ontario, creating a framework for Ontario’s approach to protecting lives and property from rising global temperatures.
The bill would also revise the Occupational Health and Safety Act to protect workers from hotter conditions, and begin the process of planning for and preventing urban wildfires. It was co-sponsored by MPPs Jamie West (Sudbury), Jessica Bell (University—Rosedale), and Kristyn Wong-Tam (Toronto Centre).
“The Ford government can always find $30 million dollars for the Premier’s luxury private jet, and time for lobbyists at cozy fundraisers,” said Tabuns. “But suddenly they can’t find the money or the time to protect Ontarians from the impacts of climate change.
“The cost of the Premier’s inaction will be severe, and will be paid by hard-working Ontarians. As temperatures rise, so too will the costs of food, housing, and insurance. Workers will be endangered by sweltering heat and the heightened risk of wildfires.
“Doug Ford has a responsibility to protect the people of Ontario from the impacts of climate change. By supporting this bill, he can take a meaningful step toward doing so.”
