🏕️ ONTARIO MAN FINED $3,500 — BUT THIS WASN’T JUST ORDINARY CROWN LAND CAMPING

A southern Ontario man has been fined $3,500 after conservation officers found a camping trailer, pickup trucks, a flatbed trailer, a shipping container and a mini excavator on public land in northern Ontario.

One of the locations was the McConnell Lakes Management Area in Lasalle Township, where camping is prohibited. Investigators also found that several of the items had been left there from October 2024 through the winter, with most not removed until the summer of 2025.

So this was more than someone simply pitching a tent for the weekend.

In Ontario, camping is still allowed for free on most Crown land, generally for up to 21 days on one site in a calendar year, after which campers must move at least 100 metres. Some areas have additional restrictions or prohibit camping altogether.

🚨🇨🇦 CANADA–U.S. TARIFF UPDATE

There are some new details tonight as Canada and the United States continue working toward a trade agreement.

Reuters reports that proposals being discussed could include lower U.S. tariffs on Canadian-made vehicles, steel and aluminum.

Another interesting development: Prime Minister Mark Carney has asked provincial premiers to consider putting U.S. alcohol back on Canadian store shelves as negotiations continue.

⚠️ Nothing is finalized yet. The proposed tariff rates are still being negotiated, and Canadians have not yet seen the complete terms of a final agreement.

The new U.S. tariff deadline is Saturday, August 22.

🇨🇦 Would you support putting American alcohol back on Canadian store shelves if it helped Canada secure lower U.S. tariffs on Canadian autos, steel and aluminum? Why or why not?

📦🚁 AMAZON DRONE DELIVERY — WOULD YOU USE THIS?

Amazon is already using its Prime Air drones in parts of the U.S. to deliver eligible packages in under an hour.

🍁 PROPOSED CLASS ACTION OVER “PURE” MAPLE SYRUP

A proposed Canada-wide class action has been filed against a Quebec maple syrup producer that does business as 9227-8712 Québec Inc., Érablière Steve Boudreau and Le sirop Angela.

The lawsuit alleges that some syrup sold as “pure” or “from Quebec” may have contained added ingredients such as cane sugar, or may have originated from other provinces. These are allegations and have not been proven in court.

The proposed class includes anyone in Canada who purchased a can of maple syrup from this producer since April 7, 2023. The claim is seeking full or partial refunds, along with compensatory and punitive damages.

👕 WHY ARE MORE DONATED CLOTHES ENDING UP IN LANDFILLS?

A new CBC News report says charity thrift stores across Canada are struggling with a surge in clothing donations at the same time as the market for unsold used clothing is getting harder to navigate.

The report names Value Village, the National Diabetes Trust, Hand in Hand Thrift Store in Halifax, and Bank & Vogue, a major Canadian used-clothing exporter.

One of the biggest issues is that there are simply fewer places for excess clothing to go once it doesn’t sell. Export costs are higher, international demand has shifted, landfill fees are rising, and fast fashion keeps adding more clothing into the system.

The National Diabetes Trust has even temporarily paused pickups from thrift stores in Nova Scotia, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia because of changing market conditions and processing pressures.

The part that really stood out to me is this: even clothes donated with good intentions can still end up in the garbage if there’s nowhere else for them to go.

🇨🇦 Would you rather see the country of origin clearly displayed right on the grocery store shelf?

CTV News is reporting that Loblaw has changed how country-of-origin information is displayed in its fresh produce aisles.

Loblaw told CTV that because produce sourcing can change frequently due to seasonality, supplier changes and availability, customers are now directed to the most current supplier-provided country-of-origin information on product labels, stickers, packaging or accompanying case labels.

CTV also reports that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency says there is no federal requirement for grocery stores to identify a product's country of origin specifically on shelf tags or other store signage.

At a nearby Safeway featured in the report, CTV showed more prominent country-of-origin signage in the produce section.

With many Canadians paying closer attention to where their food comes from, I'm curious what shoppers think:
