Inspired by nature, vibrant colour, and my love of fantasy/games. Sketching and painting have been my favourite pastimes since I was a young child. Unfortunately, I was not able to pursue it as a career and ended up in construction to pay the bills. Now, as I enter middle age, I am more driven to do what I enjoy. I want to use my hands to create works people can enjoy, instead of sticking to build

So not exactly a finished project, but I did finish the pick guard for “The Fool” guitar I’ve been working on slowly during my back issues. It’s nice to even get this little bit done. Small sense of completion.
I’ve also included an update on the Donkey Kong Country piece I’m doing for another repeat client. Going quite well but also very slow.
It’s just past six months since my surgery and it’s still very much keeping me from going full steam. There’s a lot more twisting and bending when painting then most people might realize. But making progress, and am happy to just to be back at the easel at all.

Happy 40th Anniversary Link!
Feeling old today 🤣
I definitely didn’t get the original LoZ the day it came out, but you better believe 9 yr old me was saving up my birthday and Christmas money and got it within the year. I was hooked immediately.

Hey all! I hope this post finds you well.
It’s been a long time since I’ve done anything creative and had anything to share due to my back issues and then surgery. But I’m slowly making it back to the easel as my recovery progresses.
It’s been a long, painful road so I’m happy that I had enough stamina over the past week to work on a sketch for a new project. It’s for a very patient repeat customer who commissioned this quite some time ago.
The final boss fight in Donkey Kong Country. Donkey and Diddy Kong vs King K Rool.
Now to dust off my paint brushes. I’ll be slowly starting this over the next few weeks. But I also still have my The Fool guitar project that I started a long time ago to finish. Another very patient repeat customer has had a display case for it sitting empty all this time. Thankfully I’m half way done already so it’s not as daunting as it would be otherwise.
It’s going to be slow going for a while. But hopefully I’ll be posting updates more frequently again very soon. 😊

Hey everyone. I’m still very much recovering from my spinal surgery and not able to paint for a while.
But someone pointed out to me that I had a three year FB memory pop up for this painting a couple days ago. So I thought I’d repost it seeing as that was about when my Legend of Zelda and other video game/pop culture paintings really started to take off.
I still enjoy doing pet portraits and more traditional stuff. But the last three years have really afforded me the chance to experiment and really emphasize the “Colour” in OilAndColour.
Until I’m back on my feet and at the easel again I may share some more memories. But believe me, with one project halfway through and another commission lined up, I can’t wait to get back at it and share some new artwork with you all.

Hello everyone. It’s been a long time, I hope this post finds you all well. ☺️
So, no this isn’t some new abstract artwork that I’m into.
It’s an actual picture of my spine while the surgeons worked on it very recently. I know it looks incredibly painful, and it is. But this is to fix a problem that’s been plaguing me for years, and finally drove me away from painting. Ive never been one to broadcast my woes over the internet, but I wanted to explain why my Page has been so quiet
So anyway, no matter how invasive this surgery looks (6 screws, 2 rods and 34 staples) it’s a happy turning point for me, and I really hope to be back at the easel in full force within the next couple months.
Although I will confess, when they told me they were going to put six screws in my back I pictured something a little more nuanced than what looks here like 3/4 inch wood screws from Home Depot drilled into my back with a Black and Decker. Six Million Dollar Man and Wolverine made this stuff look way cooler than it actually is. 🤣🤦♂️

Getting messages like these make all the hours at the easel worth it. I love seeing how people live with my artwork. 😊

More adventures in psychedelic guitar painting. 😆
Since my last post I’ve concentrated on the back of the guitar. Matching colours from various photographs of the original has been a challenge as it looks quite different from one photo to another. But I think I’m keeping true to the original artist’s love of bright vibrant colours.
The acrylic paint I’m using adheres well to the three plastic pieces including the pick guard. But I decided it would be best to lightly sand and prime them to assure a good bond. Now with the back piece primed I can start on the large circular design. My freehand circles aren’t too shabby, but a good old geometry set sure came in handy. 😝

As I add colour to my Fool guitar project, I thought I’d share a blast from the past. 1989 to be specific.
I’ve received some treasure troves of memories since my father’s death. And this was one of the many many paintings that he and my mother displayed throughout our home since I picked up a crayon. Not to date myself, but I was about twelve in 89 So owe much to the amazing art teacher Shirley DeLang, who my parents got me semi private lessons with. I’m sure more than a few of the brushstrokes in there are hers.
Not exactly sure where the 1st oil painting I did is, but it’s probably still among the plenty of pieces my mother is still surrounded with.

A work-in-progress post.
After a few life interruptions I’m finally well underway on The Fool guitar replication project I posted about previously. Getting the sketches right using 2d photos as reference while working on a 3d surface was challenging. Also cutting along a line, carefully placing it, stenciling it and repeating a hundred times is the most accurate way to transfer the sketches onto the guitar.
The last couple pictures are of Eric Clapton’s original guitar. I’m really looking forward to starting to lay down some of those amazing colours. Stay tuned.

Happy Friday all!
I’d like to share my latest commission, Artorias the Abysswalker and Sif his wolf guardian from Dark Souls. Oil on a 12x18 inch stretched canvas.
I was asked to represent Sif as a spirit/guardian animal, so as the gameplay involves defeating Sif well before you encounter Artorios it worked very well. I melded their two playing areas, Sif’s Darkroot Garden including Knight Artorias’ grave amongst a field of swords, and Artorias the Abysswalker’s Coliseum. Mixing the two by blending Sif’s legs with the black and purple corruption that Artorias wields while battling him.
I find the darker the painting the harder to photograph, so I’m glad I got one this good. That being said, it looks sooo much better in person and I can’t wait until my client sees it.
Anyway, have a great weekend everyone, and thanks for taking the time to check out my latest.
