K’NI 🇻🇳 The K’ni is a one-string mouth violin belonging to the ethnic minorities of Vietnam’s Central Highlands, including the Jarai, Ba Na, Xo-dang, and Ro Ngao peoples. Made from a bamboo stick and played with a bow, it is unique in that it has no resonating chamber. The player’s mouth acts as the soundbox: while striking or brushing the string, they shape the tones by opening and closing their mouth. A cotton thread, connected to a small plate held between the teeth, transmits the sound into the oral cavity, creating vibrations that resemble singing. This instrument, also known as “the singing instrument” by the Jarai, was once considered sacred. Playing it in private was forbidden, as its mystical sounds were believed to connect it to the spiritual world, making the musician a mediator between the human and the divine.
