From September 21–25, U.S. Consulate General Toronto and the American Film Showcase (AFS) brought film producer Kirk Saduski to Toronto for a week of masterclasses and discussions with students, faculty, and film-industry representatives at York University, Toronto Metropolitan University, the University of Toronto, and Cinespace Studios. Kirk, an executive at Playtone whose work includes the acclaimed series and John Adams, shared insights from his career on how to adapt historical material for the screen, in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary this year.
AFS is a U.S. international cultural-exchange program that uses American film and filmmaking to connect U.S. filmmakers with audiences, students, educators, and creative professionals abroad. It is an initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is produced by the USC School of Cinematic Arts.

On Friday, we gathered in solemn remembrance to mark 25 years since September 11th. We honored the 2,977 lives lost, including 24 Canadians, and the first responders who ran toward danger. We also remembered the outpouring of support from our Canadian friends and neighbors in the days that followed. The reception featured an exhibition by Canadian artist John Coburn, who traveled to New York in the aftermath of the attacks and documented what he witnessed through his drawings.
Our sincere thanks to Speaker Donna Skelly for joining us and for her remarks, and to the musicians from the Glenn Gould School of The Royal Conservatory for their moving performance.
