I got my daily quota of steps today !
Today my volunteer shift in the Trauma Neurosurgery Intensive Care Unit (TN-ICU) at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto was very busy.

Several seriously injured trauma patients had been airlifted to the hospital during the previous night.
As a result, there were many very worried family members wanting to visit their loved one in the ICU.
It is my job as the ICU volunteer to help the visiting families get inside the ICU to see their loved one as quickly as possible.

To do this, I have to communicate with the nurses, doctors and other medical professionals about the family members who are there to visit.

FYI - When a patient first arrives in the ICU there are many medical procedures the nurses and doctors must perform before they allow visitors to come in to see a patient.
An ICU volunteer acts as the intermediary between the doctors/nurses and the visiting family members.

Witnessing the extreme sadness of the visitors always motivates me to give as much as I can to help.
I know very well the horrors that my own family experienced when I was a patient in this very ICU, 27 years ago. 🙏

It will help us to stay in touch with our inner child and we will always feel young. 🙏

We are all so extremely different with over 100 billion neurons in our brain and these are all interconnected in so many different ways for all of us.

In addition, we also have very different life experiences, different backgrounds, different families, different perspectives and different inherited attributes. This makes us an extremely rare person. In fact, there is no one alive that is exactly like us.

Everyone has their own strengths and challenges so it makes sense to say that we are all differently-abled.
