IRCC Introduces Mandatory Upfront Medical Exams for Express Entry Permanent Residence Applicants

Starting August 21, 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will introduce a major change to the Express Entry permanent residence process. Applicants will now be required to complete their immigration medical exam before submitting their applications.

This adjustment is designed to shorten processing times and avoid delays caused by waiting for medical exam requests and results after an application is submitted. While this requirement may seem like an extra step at the beginning, it could help many applicants receive faster decisions overall.

Canada’s immigration system is facing its toughest test yet! With processing times for some programs skyrocketing up to 10 years, experts fear Bill C-12 could trigger another mass cancellation of pending applications — putting the hopes of over a million applicants in jeopardy.

From work permits taking 223 days to citizenship applications now 13 months, the delays are worsening. Critics warn IRCC may be preparing for a legislative “reset” to manage backlogs before the next election.
