Ingredients

For the Dough

* 4 cups (500 g) all-purpose flour
* 2¼ teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
* ½ teaspoon salt
* 3 medium eggs
* ¼ cup (60 ml) homemade date syrup
* ¼ cup (60 g) unsalted butter, softened
* 1 cup (240 ml) warm milk (about 38–43°C / 100–110°F)

For Brushing

* 1 egg + 1 tablespoon milk (egg wash)
* Melted butter (optional, after baking)

Step 1: Activate the Yeast (if using active dry yeast)

In a bowl, combine:

* Warm milk
* Sugar
* Yeast

Stir and let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.

If you’re using instant yeast, you can skip this step and mix it directly with the flour.

Step 2: Mix the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine:

* Flour
* Salt

Add:

* Egg
* Date syrup
* Butter
* Yeast mixture (or instant yeast with warm milk)

Step 3: Knead by Hand (10–15 Minutes)

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface.

How to Knead

1. Push the dough away from you using the heel of your palm.
2. Fold it back toward yourself.
3. Turn the dough about a quarter turn.
4. Repeat.

Continue kneading for 10–15 minutes.

The Dough is Ready When:

* Smooth
* Soft
* Elastic
* Slightly tacky but not sticky

Step 4: First Rise

Lightly grease a bowl.

Place the dough inside.

Cover with:

* Plastic wrap
* Damp towel

Let it rise for 1–1½ hours, or until doubled in size.

Step 5: Punch Down

Press gently to release the air.

Turn onto a clean surface.

Step 6: Divide

Cut into 12 equal pieces (about 70–75 g each).

Roll each into a smooth ball.

Step 7: Shape

Place the dough balls into a greased baking pan, leaving a little space between them.

Step 8: Second Rise

Cover again.

Allow to rise for 30–45 minutes until puffy.

Step 9: Brush

Brush each bun with the egg wash.

This creates a beautiful golden finish.

Step 10: Bake

Bake in a preheated oven at:

350°F (180°C)

for 18–22 minutes, or until golden brown.

Step 11: Brush with Butter

Immediately after baking, brush the tops with melted butter.

This keeps the buns extra soft and gives them a lovely shine.

Step 12: Serve

Enjoy warm with:

* Homemade date syrup
* Butter
* Peanut butter
* Cream cheese
* Jam
* Tea or coffee
