The day I recorded the interview for “Studio Monk: The Making Of”

I am a little over a month away from the day I recorded this. Winston had been battling cancer for 7 or 8 months by then. He had asked me to record an interview with a nurse for his “issues in the workplace” website... After the interview, I got up to go to the washroom and when I returned Junia was sitting in the interview chair and Winston was ready with random questions he wanted answers to.

After the interview we explained to him that I was currently putting 10 years of footage onto a timeline for a film about and we asked for permission to use his interview for the film. I am for ever grateful for this day, this mentor & the time I had with him on this planet, this magical artist and finding importance in documenting e v e r y t h i n g.

It was January 2019 and I had randomly decided to dm Junia-T to see if he needed a photographer/videographer to document any bts studio sessions. During January & February 2019, once or twice a week I would document the final stages of the album “Studio Monk”.
One day in April 2019 Junia gave me a blue hard drive and asked, “can you edit this into something?”....
That day I took the hard drive and realized he always had someone documenting bts of his studio sessions... I mean.. 10 years worth of studio session footage. and now todayyy we announce to the public - “Studio Monk: The Making Of” online film premiere ☺️

There’s so many stories about the creation of this film and I’m really excited to share them. Thank you to everyone who has supported so far and I hope to see you (virtually) at the online premiere ! Ps. We will be in the chat room 😎

I have spent the weekend researching Artists. Photographers. Story tellers. One thing I have noticed is.. it was always something in them that lit on fire before they could even smell the smoke.
_
The artists that inspire me are the ones who understand that their life is worth the art, and second - the money. Marilyn Monroe never stopped writing vulnerable thoughts down in journals, on hotel note pads, just about everywhere. Annie Leibovitz grew up travelling around in a car, taking photos out of the backseat. You can name a million more people who made or are making their life into an Art piece.
_
My point is, the comparisons made me realize, photography snuck up on me. Some people dive into their talents early and some late - and it’s only until now I notice I’ve documented just about everything in my personal and work life.
_
There may be times that the genuine work you do goes unnoticed or that you may not receive as much as you give but the work will always be important. Our planet needs more selflessness and more empathy. Less about individuals and more about the people. I’m in the process of creating my first coffee table book - sharing the timeline of my photography. These photos will hold my own stories but also and more importantly, the stories of all the beautiful people I have been blessed to meet around the world within the past few years. This year I’d like to share with you all the little moments of me.

Coming soon • moments of ash

It was Winter 2011. I was a student at Humber College, in the Fashion Arts program. I was about to graduate and try to figure out what to do with my life. That year, my program had the opportunity to travel to NYC to learn from some influential brands and media companies in the fashion world. On my last day, I walked by this man, with my camera in hand, and decided to ask for my first portrait. Here is it. This is a portrait of portrait photographer, .
