Congratulations to Orchestra Toronto’s Executive Director, Alysha Addetia, on graduating with Distinction from the SOAS University of London with a Master of Arts in Ethnomusicology, one of the UK’s highest academic honours.
As part of her degree, Alysha conducted ethnographic fieldwork across Andalusia, including Maírena del Alcor, Seville, Granada, and Toledo, as well as in Morocco. Her thesis, “Intoxicated by Sound: Flamenco, Duende, and the Ecstasy of Performance,” explored duende, the state of artistic ecstasy and emotional transcendence at the heart of flamenco performance, and traced how the musical, devotional, and affective traditions of al-Andalus continue to resonate in flamenco today.
Alongside her research, Alysha studied the kora, a 21-string “harp” native to West Africa and traditionally played by griots (oral historians and musicians). Its oral tradition, where music is learned by listening, observation, and memory rather than written notation, offered another window into the diverse ways musical knowledge is preserved across cultures.
We’re incredibly proud of Alysha’s achievement and grateful to have her bringing this global perspective and passion for music to Orchestra Toronto. Congratulations!

Orchestra Toronto celebrates the vibrancy of the spring season with ‘The Sound of Spring” on April 18, 2027.
The concert opens with Alice Ho’s Jubilation of Spring, a bright and dynamic work that captures the energy, color, and renewal of the season.
Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E Minor, featuring Cellist Lucia Ticho, follows, a deeply introspective and lyrical masterpiece that showcases Ticho’s expressive range while conveying themes of loss, reflection, and hope.
The program concludes with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, “Pastoral”, a work that evokes the tranquility and rhythms of the countryside.

Orchestra Toronto is currently accepting applications for the position of Principal Trombone for the 2026-2027 season.
As one of Canada’s largest and most dynamic community orchestras, Orchestra Toronto brings together passionate, high-calibre musicians to perform a wide range of repertoire in a welcoming and collaborative environment. We present six concerts per season at the George Weston Recital Hall (Meridian Arts Centre) and are committed to fostering musical excellenceand community engagement.
🚨Auditions will be held on Thursday, September 10th.
Position Details:
-Rehearsals: Thursdays, 7:30PM - 10:00PM (September - June)
-Location: Meridian Arts Centre - 5040 Yonge Street
-Stipend: $110.00 per service (concert day inclusive of soundcheck)
-Opportunity for renewal in future seasons
This is a core leadership role within the orchestra and offers the opportunity to perform major
symphonic works, collaborate with guest artists, and shape the sound of our brass section.
