It is with great sadness that Soundstreams marks the passing of Michael Koerner, who died on April 15, 2026, at the age of 97.

A remarkable philanthropist, visionary, and friend to the arts, Michael’s impact on Canada’s cultural life is profound and enduring. Through his leadership and generosity, he helped shape spaces where artists and audiences could come together in meaningful and lasting ways.

At Soundstreams, we are deeply grateful for his support, including his and Sonja’s commitment to projects that have allowed new music to reach audiences both in Canada and internationally.

In the past few weeks, as our work continued to travel and be heard abroad, we were reminded of the lasting ripple of his belief in artists and in the importance of sharing their work widely.

Those who had the privilege of knowing Michael will remember not only his extraordinary contributions, but also his warmth, curiosity, and the genuine pleasure he took in conversations about music and new ideas.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Sonja and the Koerner family. We join the many communities whose lives have been enriched by his generosity, and we honour his legacy with deep gratitude.
