A button from when the Ontario minimum wage was lower than $14. This was back in 2019. Back then folks got together to push to raise the wage, and here we are. Finding this in my desk reminded me we have always banded together to push for better jobs for workers. And it's worked. So we just gotta keep going like people in the past have.

The blue button is from this year. Job markets are tough not because of migrants. It's tough because bosses hoard wealth beyond what they need and scapegoat the most vulnerable.

How are you living your life, so the awful oppressive news does not erode your ethics and hope?

Be. In. Community.

Be in a room where the people reflect back the world you want to see everywhere. Utopia is on earth, even if just for a few hours, if you know where to look. And in those moments you are unburdened, and can return to the world stronger and impenetrable to the oppression.

At this round of evolution, I believe in the relationships people form with each other. I believe it is the true force of change, more lasting, powerful, and transformative than any institution can. If you are devastated, learn about the history of how change came about. Chances are you can be here because a stranger before you fought for you. I, an Asian person, can be here because activists before me fought, fought, and won. Have hope you can plant a tree that future generations can shelter under.

Grieve. Rage. And keep going forward with others.

Hope is not some frivolous empty wish. Hope anchor in personal truth will protect you and keep you feeling fulfilled during hard times. Being able to hope during hard times is a skill. You need to know what you value and what gives you meaning, do things that meet those values, and that's how you feel keep on living believing in a better future.
