This bird sculpture of a parrot’s is a deliberate focus on the head and upper part of the body - a bust. Generally a format in sculpture focusing on humans it seemed appropriate here because I wanted to focus on the expressiveness of the bird and its gaze - shown from both sides here to allow for a focus on the subtle differences. As I was originally inspired by the Military Macaw the assertive disposition, ruffled feathers and piercing glances seemed to fit the authority of this amazing bird.

So thrilled that this Prothonotary Warbler is winging its way to Brooklyn, NYC. Found only in SW Ontario in Canada while it is breeding, and endangered in this country, the bird is more plentiful in the SE USA. To learn more about this species try . To participate in avian conservation in Canada and learn more about birds in general contact .canada . Thank you to .gallery who has represented me for years and sold many of my works - both paintings and sculptures!

These are made using a rolling pin to flatten and compress the clay, which is laid upon - in this case - our old plastic camping plates, and then left to dry under compression and high humidity for 5 days. Then bisque fired, then refired with glaze. Thus each plate takes at least a week to create.

I think I’ll only ever make one set of functional pottery - dinner plates. Inspired by a trip to CDMX - where design culture thrives - I saw some plates that I desired. But the expense of shipping, worries about breakage, and cost, left me without food on my plate, and a sense of starvation! So, what’s a boy with clay to do!? And so it began, an exploration, size?, colour, how to avoid cracking and warping? Finally, after trial and error - one plate that survived firing. Tonight, my husband and I will dine on rustic, hand-made ceramic dinnerware. Next challenge? Will they survive the dishwasher?!!!
