Electric Sense
CIUT 89.5FM from our transmitter, or www.ciut.fm from anywhere in the world. Wednesday nights, 23:00 until midnight. Host: James Bailey
A radio programme dedicated to unusual and creative music of all sorts. Electronic, experimental, improvised, modern orchestral/chamber composition, etc. Most forms of "popular" music are eschewed unless they somehow have some relevance to other material being played and even those cases are likely to be rare. Emphasis on Canadian artists, though international friends are not ignored.
Lots of new and upcoming releases this week, Starting with a track from Vortlimpa that is available either from them or the compilation to which it was submitted; they will be playing live at the Tranzac Club in Toronto on July 26th, along with 3 other acts We then went on a trip to the moon thanks to Jack Hertz in celebration of the recent Artemis mission, followed by an odd soundwork from Christof Migone. Game composer McDonald had us Fading into the next set before Ryan Scott presented Kati Agocs' FOMO, which led to Mr. Occhipinti telling us You Stepped Out. Things wrapped up with a quiet piece by R. Grunwald courtesy of Imaginary North.

This one started off with a couple of jazz tracks from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, the first recorded in 1985 and finally getting a release just a week or so ago, then from Montreal with a quartet that will be touring Canada this year to celebrate their 30th anniversary! We then transitioned rather abruptly into some electroacoustics with live instrument (oboe, in this case), from composer Bekah Simms. Closing out were a couple of electroacoustic works, first from about thirteen years ago by a couple of UK lads who had moved to Canada individually. Lastly, part of the latest in RikM's monthly series of releases.

The fundraising show arrives at last; if you haven't yet contributed, and would like to, go to the home CIUT page and follow the DONATE button to support Real Roots Radio in Toronto, and especially programmes like ES!! I tried to get a good variety of things on this one, from folks who have either supported the station in the past, or who have provided material for airplay. All we need now is your contribution to keep the wheels rollin'.

Less than 3 hours to showtime, so get ready to show ES and its host CIUT some deep love during our fundraising hour!! Easiest way is via the DONATE button on the home page, so get your fingers, or your mouse, ready!
Fundraising week is underway, and we're off to a fabulous start, with a fifth of our goal achieved before the official beginning! As usual, our goal is $100k, which we usually reach before the end, but we can't get there without your contributions, so go to the CIUT home page and follow the DONATE button to get us closer. The amount isn't as important as the effort; many small donations ($25 is all that's needed for a tax receipt here in Canada) can be just as effective - or even more so - as a few large ones. Anything above $89.50 includes membership in the station which allows for a vote at the annual AGM; $125 gets you one of two different, and fabulous, Runt-designed t-shirts, but $200 gets you both!! If you are able to go to $500 it allows you to programme an entire two hour slot in our schedule where you can play what you want, and any multiple thereof increments the time by two hours.
The important thing though, is making the contribution, either online (greatly preferred), by phone, or just drop by the station with a big wodge of folding stuff. It would be especially nice to hear from all the folks who have been downloading the archived editions of ES from Podbean, because that is another service we offer that adds to expenses.
It would be really nice if someone is able to come down to the station during the show to help out on the phones; though it's rare anyone calls in these days one never can tell. Email me at [email protected] to let me know.
Thanks for listening, and thanks in advance for your contributions to keep Real Roots Radio rolling in Toronto - and around the world!
A sad first half of the show this week, as we paid tribute to Cris Derksen, cellist and composer of Cree and Mennonite heritage, who was tragically killed is a road accident in northern Alberta last weekend. Though they had already achieved so much, there was still promise for more great things ahead. We send condolences to family, friends, and colleagues.
Also on the programme are pieces from recent releases by Jason Noble whose recent Centrediscs CD has many interesting reworkings of Newfoundland songs, stories, and music; the latest release from The Tiny Orchestra, whose enigmatic sounds never cease to entertain; and we finished with an excerpt of a track from the latest Dog Park release out of Perth, Western Australia, by Interzona, making a noisy exit indeed!

As you have no doubt noticed, we are in the ramp-up to our Spring fund-raising week starting May 25th, which means the ES edition will occur on the 27th. If you donate before the 25th, there is a special draw for a prize pack kindly donated by the folks at the Griffin Poetry Prize, which includes two tickets for their gala event, copies of the five short-listed books, and more!
Also, we have two different t-shirt designs this year, both by local artist extraordinaire Runt that are mighty nice! (available at the$120+ level)
Online donations are easiest all 'round, but if that's not your thing there are more traditional options. The important thing is the donation, not the method; even if it's just $5 in nickles. If you listen to the show, regardless of where you may be, a donation of whatever amount not only helps with the upkeep of equipment - such as our new broadcast boards - but show support for the programming. Please keep ES in your thoughts when donating!!
A wide variety this week, from drones to ambient, noisy to chamber strings. All recent or forthcoming.

Still waiting on an audio copy of last night's show, so in the meantime here is the list of what was played so you can make your own version if you like.
The audio has finally arrived!! It can be heard at the ES page on the CIUT website, or directly at: https://electricsense.podbean.com - though it will be out of order, in that until the next show is loaded up it will be first on the list rather than in date sequence.
