The Independent Electricity System Operator’s (IESO) recent procurement of 14 new renewable energy projects, including 12 solar projects and two wind projects, at an average price of $87.80/MWh is an important step forward for Ontario’s electricity system.

We congratulate the IESO and look forward to seeing these projects move ahead. Wind and solar will be important components of a reliable, affordable, and low-carbon energy future. This procurement also demonstrates how significantly renewable energy costs have declined over the past two decades.

We had a great day connecting for meetings and an evening reception in Ottawa for Great Lakes Day on the Hill 2026! Throughout the day we had the opportunity to reconnect with our fellow Great Lakes - St. Lawrence partners and collaborators and to take part in important conversations about the future of the region. Pollution Probe shared insights on our work tackling nutrient management and addressing plastic pollution and drought management.

Meetings and/or remarks from MP Terry Duguid, MP Wade Grant, Senator Jim Quinn, President of the Canada Water Agency, Mark Fisher, B.Sc, ICD.D, MP David Epp and others, focused on the importance of collaboration across borders, sectors, and organizations to protect and support the health and wealth of the largest freshwater system in the world. We appreciated the opportunity to speak with the many parliamentarians, staff and other attendees.

Pollution Probe looks forward to continuing to work with government, industry, and community organizations across the region to reduce and prevent pollution, improve water quality, and help ensure water security in the Great Lakes for generations to come.

Today is Healthy Environments for Learning Day (HELD) 2026, an annual national campaign led by the Canadian Partnership for Children’s Health and Environment (CPCHE) to raise awareness of environmental health risks facing children in schools and early learning and child care settings.

This year’s theme, Outdoor Learning Settings, highlights the importance of natural outdoor spaces for play and learning, which support children’s physical, cognitive, and emotional well-being. At the same time, the growing use of plastics and other synthetic materials in play environments is raising new concerns for children’s health in Canada.

As a founding partner of CPCHE and through our work to reduce and prevent plastic pollution and advance electric school buses in Canada, Pollution Probe is proud to support this campaign and remains committed to helping create safer, healthier environments for children to learn and grow.

Learn more about the campaign by visiting healthyenvironmentsforkids.ca.

Happy Earth Day 2026 from Pollution Probe! 🌎 This year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” highlights the importance of collective action in protecting the environment. It reminds us that environmental progress does not rest solely with governments and decision-makers; it is also driven by the everyday actions of communities and individuals.

We'll be celebrating Earth Day this Sunday, April 26 at Downsview Park in Toronto. Join us and other local environmental organizations working at the heart of our communities.
