Aphasia Institute
Aphasia (uh-fay'-zhuh) is an acquired communication disorder caused by an injury to the brain.
The Aphasia Institute is a community-based centre of excellence, pioneering programs and practices that help the 100,000 Canadians with aphasia learn how to communicate in new ways so they can re-join life’s conversations. Through direct service, research, and education and training, Aphasia Institute has built a reputation as a world leader in aphasia care.
Volunteering is a win-win. Feels good and helps others.

Raising awareness starts with showing up and having conversations.
Our team was delighted to participate in the Community Stroke Event at Mackenzie Health, where we connected with community members, shared resources, and helped raise awareness about aphasia.
Thank you to everyone who visited our table and took the time to learn more about communication, stroke, and aphasia.
In recognition of June being Aphasia Awareness Month, we asked our members; what is their favourite thing about the Aphasia Institute?
In this video, our members share their favourite things about the Aphasia Institute and the impact it has had on their lives.
From meaningful conversations to lasting friendships, their stories highlight the importance of connection, support, and community for people living with aphasia.
One of our amazing volunteers has run this fun cooking program, Suzie Chews. A great opportunity for our members to try new recipes and get to sample yummies.
Yum, yum!
