It’s a wrap for our Spring 2026 CALL Cohort! 🎉🎉

In the past three months, our CALL interns made deep connections here at your with people, wildlife, and environment. They joined our team of Guardians of Wild and we hope they continue being the guardians wherever they go, inspiring more and more people to be climate and sustainability champions and wildlife advocates.

Hi, I’m Erica, one of the spring 2026 CALL interns! My final project was about the connections between people, nature, and our language.

Researchers have found a correlation between areas with lots of species (high biodiversity) and areas where lots of languages are spoken (high language diversity). These may seem unrelated, until we remember that we are animals! We are deeply integrated into our ecosystems, which means that human diversity (cultural, linguistic, etc.) is an extension of biodiversity. This also means that climate change affects us, just as it affects plants and animals.

I noticed that this relationship is evident in our language: we are underdogs 🐶 and early birds 🐦. We plant 🪴 ideas and use websites 🕸️, and this is only English! I chose plant and animal phrases from a few languages commonly spoken in Toronto to show how connected we all are to nature. I see Toronto (and Toronto Zoo) as a beautiful mosaic of nature and culture, and I wanted to celebrate that in my art.

Language has power, so we should use our voices to speak up for the environment! Check out my seeds of thought 🌱 at the bottom of my art to see how you can take action.

The CALL interns at your Toronto Zoo are wrapping up their projects and getting ready to share their incredible work with everyone on May 20 & 21! 🌿🌎

Stop by to explore inspiring projects focused on climate change, conservation, sustainability, and the small actions that can make a big impact for our planet. From learning about monarch butterflies and pollinators in Keep the Sky Orange, to exploring the connection between biodiversity and languages through Voices of the Wild, each project offers a unique perspective on our connection to the natural world.

Discover Rooted Resilience: The Story of Our Food, which sheds light on agriculture, climate stress, and food sustainability, and get ready to tease your brain by exploring which species may survive climate change and make it onto a “Climate Ark” — while learning how even the toughest species still depend on healthy ecosystems and biodiversity to thrive.

These projects encourage curiosity, conversation, and action while sharing stories of conservation, cultural knowledge, and environmental resilience.
We’re so proud of the passion, creativity, and hard work these interns have put into their projects, and we can’t wait for everyone to experience them! 💚

We hope you’ll stop by, ask questions, and be part of the change!

Toronto Zoo’s CALL (Climate Action Learning & Leadership) Internship, offered through the Career Pathways Program, reflects the Zoo’s commitment to EDIA and provides individuals who are passionate about conservation and the environment with hands-on learning opportunities focused on climate change and environmental sustainability, while also offering exposure to the diverse career opportunities within the field of conservation.

This week, our CALL Intern, Mansi, worked hands-on with the Horticulture department ( ) to create a butterfly nursery for her CALL project 🌱🦋
After weeks of planning and research, she created a habitat to support butterflies as they grow and thrive. Along the way, she learned gardening techniques and enjoyed working directly with the soil and plants.
While working in the garden bed, she spotted a brown-lipped snail, a scarab beetle, and a scarab beetle grub 🐌🪲 Just like earthworms, these little critters help break down organic matter and keep the soil healthy. We can’t wait to see who, or what, starts appearing in the garden next 👀
Join Mansi at your Toronto Zoo ( ) on May 20 & 21 to learn about the plants used in this nursery, how they help butterflies, and what we can all do to support conservation and climate action. Help us keep the sky orange 🧡

Come spend a day in the life with CALL Intern Erica as she shadows the Indo-Malaya zookeepers! 🦏🦚

She was able to participate in a variety of tasks, from feeding to cleaning to preparing enrichment. She gained a new appreciation for the hard work our keepers are doing every day.

Our CALL intern Megan, had set up an interactive booth during Polar bear week where she had the opportunity to engage with guests, encouraging them to take their own calls to action to help mitigate climate change. She spoke to them about the current status and importance of sea ice for polar bears. She educated guests about the work that organizations like and do in conserving these gentle giants. Learn more about ways in which you as a community can help by visiting https://polarbearsinternational.org/act-now/take-action/
