Most parents can feel the difference between older cartoons and fast modern shows, even if they cannot explain it. Classic cartoons moved slowly, with long pauses, steady scenes, and predictable rhythms that matched the natural pace of a child’s developing brain. The nervous system had time to process, recover, and stay regulated.

Newer shows use rapid scene changes, bright flashes, layered sounds, and quick humor designed to hold attention through constant stimulation. With more than 10,000 cuts per hour, the brain never gets a chance to rest. This pace trains the nervous system to expect instant excitement, making everyday life feel slower and harder to tolerate for many children.

Neuroscience suggests that overstimulation can affect attention, frustration tolerance, and emotional balance. It is not that modern cartoons are harmful. It is that young brains need periods of slow, predictable input to develop self regulation. When the screen moves too fast, the brain struggles to settle afterward, and parents often see this in mood and behavior.

Sometimes progress means returning to what worked. Gentle pacing, simple storytelling, and fewer visual cuts support healthy development far better than nonstop stimulation. Slower cartoons may not look advanced, but they give the brain something modern shows rarely offer: room to grow in peace.

WHAT is going on Ontario???? This makes me angry. This is not developmentally appropriate. Canada has been praised for its play based approach to kindergarten. From the many books I’ve read on the topic it all points to the same conclusion - early is not better. It doesn’t lead to better „results”

Check out the book „The Most Important Year” by Suzanne Bouffard where she rips apart the US push to early academics and praises other countries (like Canada!) for their play based approach.

Perhaps our „poor academic results” have less to do with 5 year olds not doing fractions and more to do with the global trauma and social isolation we experienced with the 2020 pandemic.

Kindergarteners need to be playing. Kindergarten should be child-lead. Language arts should be listening to mother goose rhymes. They have their whole lives to learn grammar and solve math equations.

I am beyond grateful to homeschool my kids, but also very angry for the children going into this new curriculum. I’ll always be a proponent for accessible developmentally appropriate public education and this ain’t it.

Anyone else have a curriculum buying problem? 🫠

There are a few homeschool resources and curriculums that have stuck over the years, but I hear it’s consistency… must stop buying new curriculum 😵‍💫

Michael Clay Thompson is a good good language arts curriculum though 🤍

When you see kids playing, they are also learning. 👀🤓

And we could’ve went on & on with the skills and benefits of PLAY!

They are processing emotions.
They are self-regulating.
Play is so important for kids 💜

When we can see the need that is driving the behavior, we can meet that underlying need instead of focusing on controlling the behavior. We develop more compassion and empathy. We equip our child with better ways to communicate their needs. We build connection and trust rather than conflict.

When we are tempted to react to our child’s unpleasant behavior, we can slow down and ask ourselves, “What does this behavior really mean? What need are they trying to meet?”

Posted • I do not always remember this - but it's so essential to look beyond the behavior we see if we want to help kids learn better strategies. The desire for play, autonomy, and fairness are valid needs, even though pushing, aggression, or interrupting are poor strategies to meet those needs.

To communicate effectively, use your body language, tone, and words to show children that you -

➡ understand their point of view.
➡ empathize with their feelings.
➡ recognize the needs motivating their behaviors.

✨ Today, practice uncovering what your child really needs instead of "how to stop the behavior you don't like."

💙💬 This helps your brain start thinking beyond the actions you see so you can more easily respond with compassion...
