20 Years of The Paper Place

Twenty years ago today, I took over the shop I had worked at and loved, and reopened it as The Paper Place. I had no idea what I was doing - just a lot of hope, determination, and love for what this place was, and what it could be.

There have been so many beautiful moments since then… and if I’m honest, some incredibly hard ones too.

More than once over the past few years, I’ve wondered if we’d make it to another anniversary. But somehow - thanks to all of you - we’re still here. Still creating. Still fighting to keep this small business alive.

To every customer who’s walked through our doors, to the community that continues to believe in us, and to our incredible staff who give their energy every single day - thank you. You’re the reason we’ve made it this far!

Here’s to twenty years of paper, perseverance, and the people who make it all worthwhile. ❤️

📦 Just a heads up! The Paper Place will be closed on Monday and Tuesday while we conduct our annual inventory count.

If we finish up early on Tuesday, we’ll open the doors as soon as we’re done - so feel free to check in then!

The post we did not want to make…

As of August 29th, the US government has removed the de minimis exemption of $800 on goods coming into the USA. This means that all orders, no matter the value, may now be charged import taxes and fees when they arrive.

We have heard these fees could be quite high, and the last thing we want is for anyone to be surprised with these extra costs. If a parcel is refused, we not only have to pay to have it shipped back to us, but we also lose what we already spent to send it to you in the first place. For a small shop like ours, we cannot afford to absorb these costs.

For now, we are pausing US shipping through our online store while we figure out the best way forward. We know many of you use our papers for your own businesses, and we hate the thought of cutting off access to the products you count on. We also know how hard it is when something completely outside of your control affects your livelihood.

If you are still happy to place an order knowing you will be responsible for the new fees, please email us and we can process it for you directly.

This change is a huge blow for us, as so many of our wonderful customers are in the USA. Losing such a large source of our online revenue is especially hard when it already feels like we are constantly navigating a shifting and challenging economic landscape for small businesses in Canada.

Your support means the world to us, and we’re looking forward to the day we can send our products your way again. Thank you for being such an important part of our story.
